Maddog (230), Kettering, Ohio, USA Jun 11, 2009 Draft on the cask at the brewery. A jet black beauty with a big coffee nose. Pretty light in body for an Imperial Stout. The flavor is that of roasted malts, smoke, and coffee. It is good, but falls short of an Imperial. Here’s an idea: brew a beer and if it falls short, change the name. Why not call it Espresso Stout? BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Jul 29, 2008 Cask @ the brewery - Dark brownish black with some burgundy highlights and a small but ample light brown head. Roasted coffee and chocolate nose. This is just like drinking a coffee with almost no beer qualities whatsoever. Beaver (587), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jul 4, 2008 Updated: Jan 7, 2009Cask at the brewery. Pours a dark brown black with a bubbly light tan head that retains throughout and laces the glass.
The aroma is a bit subdued - grains, a lot of coffee, chocolate and a little anise.
The flavor is coffee, black licorice, sweet grainy chocolate malts and a little dark fruit with good bitterness at the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and slightly watery (to be expected from cask).
Overall, a very fine coffee stout with lots of coffee and very well balanced and good tasting.
