It is supposed to be an ancient recipe plus hops, but I didn’t find the bitterness they imparted to be particularly pleasant.
This beer pours a very bright red color...almost to the extent of "Big Red" cola, but still appears quite beer-y. Aroma is light and floral, and reminded me a great deal of champagne. Flavor was OK...I got some nice light hoppy as I first sipped on the front of my tongue, but I got a thick unpleasant malty-tasting bitterness on my tongue in the back of my mouth. Mouthfeel was unremarkable. This beer is pretty unique, but as a total package I wasn’t super-impressed by it. SledgeJr (3003), Omaha, Nebraska, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 25, 2007 In the bottle from Beertopia. A fairly red beer. Nice beige/yellow ochre head. Elderberry aroma. The berry flavors emerge deeply from the beer- grapes and raspberries. The finish is quite nutty. Fairly thick and chewy in body. Good stuff. Beer #2420 for me (dopehead music played). tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 18, 2007 Bottle via trade with IrishBoy. Upon first nosing, I thought that this was an Oktoberfest. It has that biscuity malty aroma that is so common with those beer. There is some nice piney hops with a bit of caramel malt as well. Pours a rich, dark, copper with a frothy light khaki head. Flavor was pleasantly malty and hoppy. Nice balance between toasty malt and grassy hops. Rich and creamy on the palate. Surprised, but this one was quite nice. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 7, 2007 12 oz bottle; nose of piney and floral hopswith some caramel; clear rusty brown with a small tan head; flavor of hop bitterness, caramel and some fruitiness. Decent strong ale! drfabulous (1275), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 7, 2007 Very surprisingly good. That "red" label is deceiving. Or I think of crappy American reds (Killians) or Flemish sour (Duchess). This strong ale is like a lesser Alpha King. It’s a rich strong ale. Nice hops. Maybe now one of my favorites from this brewery.
