The aroma picked up a great deal of roast with soy, star anise, and unclassifiable black malts.. these notes supported wafts of fresh pine and floral notes. The flavor is led by the same soy and anise notes with green coffee beans, pine, and herbal bitterness.. sticky at the finish, and I did wasn’t the biggest fan of the chosen maltage. Thicker-bodied with lower carbonation (still prickly at times).. bitterness was moderate and not necessarily complementary.. alcohol remains masked save for a few brief shining moments at the finish. This was just OK. BrewCzar (108), St Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 12, 2008 Updated: Jun 19, 200812oz bottle. Pours dark but thin with a fizzy carbonated light colored head. Produces aromas of malt, chocolate, cherry. and slightly sour. Tastes of bitter chocolate and a sour cherry-like finish. Fairly simple palate that lacks the complexity one would anticipate in an "Imperial Stout". Not impressive but good. Taste improves slightly when rested after opening. norsedoc (162), USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 1, 2008 On tap at brewery. Pours jet black with little head. Sweetish, then syrupy, then sour. Some smokey flavor. Bitterness is lost. Seems to lack some cohesion of flavors. Very good, but a little disappointed in this one. shanepardue (107), Raytown, Missouri, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 22, 2008 Extreme dark brown with a mocha head that has some staying power. Good lacing. Aroma of cappuccino. Taste starts out mild and creamy but builds to a nice mixture of coffee, roasted malts and caramel. Excellent mouthfeel. Aftertaste is a bit pedestrian - I would like to have tasted more hops. All in all, not a bad Impy stout. Perhaps a good one to introduce a novice to. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 12, 2008 Murky, inky black, with a big, creamy tanned head.
Not too much in the nose, a bit empty, actually, and I’m searching for things here, but....I’m just getting light cocoa, cream, ...roasty, coffee-ish, but not too much more.
Taste: big, beefy, roasty, toasty, ....very tactile and texturous...rather grittty. But about medium for an imperial stout, not exactly busting down any doors. But very warm and friendly in the mouth, nicely toasted, pleasant and congenial.
That’s okay, I guess...I like Imperials that torch the ground after they trod it, but that’s me...
Really, I wanted to like this, but it shook out as just average. bu11zeye (5655), Frisco, Texas, USA
