This just came out and I was eager to try it as I am a big fan of O’dell’s other beers. I was not disappointed. Really pretty red color with a pillowy finger and a half head. Pretty good lacing throughout. Nose is citrus and hop flowers, a little pine. Smooth mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. Really nice hoppy flavor that fades to slightly sweet as the aftertaste fades. This is a severely good beer. Much closer to an IPA than an amber ale. I’ll have to try this side by side with their IPA. Definitely worth seeking out. jah noth (1017), Rochester, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2009 Off the charts aroma of tangerines and clementines. Semi-sparkling nice clear red appearance with a quickly disappearing white head. Slick flavor, not overly sweet with deep hop resin. Mild caramel and toffee with hints of grass. Kind of similar to red seal but hoppier. Very nice. Thanks Brad! Beaver (598), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 24, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber with a creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet fruity, piney, resiny hops with a little pepper and some nutty malts.
The flavor is sweet caramel malts and fruit with a nice piney lightly resinous hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with smooth carbonation.
Overall, a very nice drinking well balanced beer. It has some great hop flavors. Dmalone102 (218), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 27, 2009 This was my payment for doing my sister’s taxes... sweet deal.
I’m rating this against the BJCP guidelines for an American Amber Ale.
Aroma- Floral hops, some pine, a little bready and some esters.
Appearance- Deep amber color, fantastic clarity. Creamy tan head with great retention.
Flavor- Hops all over. The sour receptors on the side of my toungue tingle quite a bit. I think the sourness comes from a citrus hop character, it is not unpleasant. High hop bitterness. The malt profile is drowned out by the hops.
Palate- Highly carbonated, medium bodied beer.
Overall Impression- This is a great beer. I love this kind of hop character. Any points I detracted were because that kind of hop dominance is innapropriate for the style, but those detractions still added up to a 4.2 rating. Great beer. sneagrams3 (1757), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 27, 2009 Tasted 2/27/09. 12oz bottle. Filtered with a deep amber, ruby hue. Thick finger width of beige head. Very hoppy aromas. Notes of grapefruit and lemon citrus. Touch caramel malts in the aroma, but the hops definitely dominate. Medium bodied with a somewhat dulled malt profile. Caramel and toasty malts. And once again, the hop aspect is dominant. Earthy hops with a bright grapefuity flavor. Slightly acidic on the tongue at the finish. Finishes dry with a lingering acrid hop twang. This is fresh and really nice. While the balance of the profile might be a little skewed toward the hops, it still has a great malty palate. Once again, Odell nails it! xmarcnolanx (798), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 1, 2009 Aroma is hugely hoppy, sweet red fruit maltiness. Wow, is this an IPA?
Taste is sweet fruit, hop bitterness on the back-end and some hop-derived fruit on the front end too.
Did I mention this was hoppy?
Get some toasted bread in the middle; sugar, carbonated bitterness.
Yum.
Very solid. BeerandBlues2 (3216), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 14, 2009 Bottle. Pours clear rubied amber with a large, creamy, off-white, persistent head, good lacing. Aroma is average malt (hay, straw, bread, cookie), average hops (flowers, grass, citrus), average yeast (dough, earth) with notes of pear, apple, and candy. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. Very smooth beer, easy to drink, lovely balance of malt and hop. heemer77 (4305), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 8, 2009 Very pretty deep bronze body with a lightly off white soapy looking head. The nose is sweet with some toffee and roasted peanuts. There is a nice citrus sharpness to counteract the candy bar smell. The taste has some nice floral orange hops with some more peanut character. There is also some cola in the finish. Overall, on the hoppy end of ambers and another solid entry from O’Dell.
