OldGrowth (1360), the Contaiment Area, North Carolina, USA Jun 29, 2009 bottle, from trade with Strykzone. Aroma was Ok. I got a nice initial citrus aroma only to get overpowered by a cardboard, paper thing and sour grapefruit. Clean brownish orange color, ok head that faded quickly, no lace. Bitter flavor, grapefruit, little herbal, and cardboard. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish, Eh, this one didn;t come together for me. Aroma quickly went south after a nice initial scent. Flavor also suffered an odd combo of sweet and bitter. I’m guessing it was oxidized, made for a slow drink. Oh well.... xnoxhatex (1074), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA Jun 28, 2009 Bottle from Sicilianos, Grand Rapids, MI. On recomendation from 17floor. Hazy orange-red with creamy white head. Aroma is floral, citrus, a little grapefruit, caramel, sweeter, nice. Flavor is citrus and grapefruit with a little dirtiness, dry malt caramel and biscuit malt and toffee, sweeter but not cloyingly so, a little pine in the finish as well. Medium to thin body with active carbonation and light creaminess. Prettyy nice. Pawola22 (507), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jun 27, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a clear, slightly burnt orange colored body with a finger-width, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma is caramel malty and floral with a weird glue nose. There is some pine, grapefruit, toffee, nuts, but for some reason this gives off a light glue aroma. Flavor is interesting as well. Doesn’t taste like glue (thank Darwin), but its as if the sweet caramels and floral hops come in from each side of the mouth and splash together for a jumbled finish. Lots of florals and some piney citrus start this off before the sweet caramel and toffee come in. They don’t quite come together. Dry, medium bodied, and smooth with a lingering floral citrus caramel. Overall, an interesting IPA. It has enough flavor and aroma, but there’s something off about each of them. Hmm. angrypirate06 (351), Texas, USA Jun 27, 2009 Bottle. Pours a amberish color. Aroma of pine, floral hops, and some maltiness. Flavor was hops, nice floralness, and a bit of caramel. Ceebs25 (180), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jun 25, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pretty pleasant on the nose, not overly strong for an ipa, but nice. Aroma notes include a fairly prominent resiny pine, flower stems, earth, some nutty caramel, and cereal grains. Pour had thinner, buttery cream head, decent retention, medium-light fullness, and a tan-orange color. The mouthfeel is overall pretty good, with a good light bit at the start that flows into a stickier finish that is not overly done. I think the flavors, cascade hops are pretty well showcased, with floral pine hops standing out very clearly, and nice backing of sweeter mild fruits and caramel. So though it really didn’t blow my mind while I drank it, it is definitely a beer I wouldn’t mind drinking all night. 17thfloor (1147), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 24, 2009 12oz bottle. This bottle seems to have some age on it, however, judging from aroma I can tell it was probably quite the beer when fresh. Pours a murky dull orange with a frothy off-white head. Faded hop and cardboard aroma, however, a decent amount of peachiness underneath. Flavor is much the same, medium smooth caramel, peachy hops, some oxidation. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Would love to get one fresh. frankenkitty (1873), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Jun 23, 2009 Thick-hazed, honey/bronze in color under a thin, whitish head. This has aged a while, but the nose still finds plenty of resiny, piney hops along with lemon, grapefruit and instant tea. Hops are a little more tame in the flavor, but all the aromatic elements can still be tasted and there is a bit of a citric/peppery bite at the end. Surprisingly creamy mouthfeel. Overall refreshing. ~~~~~~~~~~ 12 oz. bottle from Cornfield quite some time ago.
GJF (418), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA Jun 15, 2009 Updated: Jun 25, 2009Had this on tap (cask pour) at the Iron Barley in St. Louis. Delightfully creamy and rich, lots of floral hop flavor in the finish. Had this on tap elsewhere as well and it wasn’t nearly as good, but on cask at the I.B. it was an excellent beer.
