| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 29, 2008 bottle. Pours a rich black with hints of ruby red in thinner sections. Large tan head quickly dissipates. Light smoke and charcoal on the nose... also some soy and earthen notes. Flavor is gamey, like venison jerky. Smokey dried friuts with a slight tartness on the back back sides of the tongue. Ends like a softer peated scotch. Nice medium body makes this an easy drinker. Crafty07 (392), Florence, Kentucky, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 26, 2008 I’ve tried exactly one smoked porter so far, this one. From what I’ve tasted, I might have come across the best example.
The only smoked beer I’ve have to compare this to are the Rauchbier types made by the German brewery Aecht and this more mellow offering doesn’t overpower the taster with overbearing smoked malts.
Give this one a try. BrianHagmeier (257), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 14, 2008 Pours a dark, dark brown. Okay, its black. Medium frothy head. Sweet smoke flavor. I think I just drank from the that drip can that hangs from the bottom of my Bar-Bee. Once you get past that charcoal kick in the mouth its not bad. swimmer571 (5), Winona, Minnesota, USA does not count | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 27, 2008 From bottle poured with almost no head whatsoever. Aroma was weak but still pleasant, smokey. Poured almost completely opaque with slight amber hues. I guess I enjoyed it, but it seemed all around less than anticipated. stoutchap (297), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 20, 2008 Poured from bottle at Lunar Brewing (Villa Park). A nice red-brown color and a thin tan head. A whiff of smoke in the nose which continues into the first sip - a solid woody smoke flavor. A little malt flavor and a bit of chocolate. The mouthfeel is fizzy and a little thin. I really like the starting flavor, but the brew settles into one note after a handful of sips. Great beer for cooking (esp. chili or marinades for steak), decent for drinking. dmac (1449), Toms River, New Jersey, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jan 20, 2008 12 oz bottle shared with willblake. Pours a solid brown with a small frothy light tan head. Smokey sweet aroma that is very nice. Flavor of roasted malts, burnt coffee beans and a nice smokey aftertaste. An okay beer from an okay guy, well unless he’s being delusional and confusing reality with 21 Jump Street. HomeBrewHawk (273), De Soto, Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 17, 2008 12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a deep opaque brown/black. Bottle conditioned. Quickly dissipating head, not much carbonation. Hickory smoke in the aroma with a little sausage and coffee. Aroma fades with time.
Starts off a little on the sweet side. Moderate smokiness. Lingering finish of chocolate malt. Medium body.
This might be a good introduction to smoked beers, not too overpowering with the smoke. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 14, 2008 The color was deep chocolate. The head was thin, fizzy, and off-white. The aroma was smokey, bacon, charred, and malty. The flavor was a bit anti-climactic. There was some roast, some bacon smokey taste, but not too complex. The palate was average. The finish was clean.
