| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 8, 2007 Bottle. Poured an opaque dark brown with minimal off-white head. Little lacing. Potent smoky aroma of hickory and bacon. This wonderful aroma is a bit of let down, as the smoke is less pronounced in the flavor, mingling with an overall roasted character. Good, but underwhelming. Medium body with a touch of lingering bitterness. cathcacr (588), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Mar 2, 2007 You’ll want to sniff this straight from the bottle to get full aroma impact. It’s great there, but not well-retained in the glass; part of that is because the head vanishes in the blink of an eye. Literally! I blinked, and next thing I knew, someone stole the head from this beer. Flavor lives up well to advertised smoke, but finish is watery. Still reasonably satisfying, 7/10. It does stuff more smoke character into there than Stone’s Smoked does; if Stone got this much smoke in there, it’d be all that much more kick-ass.
Playing: Kiing Crimson’s "Red". More odd/interesting than this beer, that’s for sure. Is it really Crimson, and not Zappa?

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 18, 2007 Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a small tanned head. Smells like bacon, ham, and salty minerals. High carbonation, spritzy mouthfeel with toasty caramel flavours and some straighforward smokiness and tobacco leaves. Pretty solid. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 9, 2007 Bottle (12oz). Shared with mds, my bottle via trade with Iowaherkeye. Opaque black with ruby highlights, small foamy tan wisp of a head. Nice smoked pancetta salty bacon aroma, some hop bitterness and iron tang (blood-like) in the background. Taste reminds me of a lingering smokey aftereffect of a fire in a cowbarn, funky, almost peat and compost-like --- but it works, strangely - pretty sweet in the finish, brown sugar malt. Average body, fairly flat - weird combo of meat/smoked and brown sugar, but oddly I like it - would go awesomely with a hot shepherd’s pie. Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 6, 2007 Standard looking porter. Cola brown with tan head. Good aroma of smoke and lebkuchen. Well-balanced, slight touch of sweetness matched by a twang of smoke. One of the smokier beers I’ve had. For me, the palate could have been more oily, but I’ll deal with it. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 26, 2007 Meaty aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Bacony flavor with citrus and chocolate accents. Well balanced. Mild carbonation and fairly thin mouthfeel. Not bad. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 22, 2007 Pours a deep dark brown, topped by half an inch of light brown sudsy foam. This reduces to a thick ring and a thin film in a minute or so. Good lacing. Smoke and chocolate in the aroma.
More chocolate than smoke in the flavor, and more roast than chocolate. Mellow in all of the flavors, blending nicely. Medium body, very gentle carbonation. Not an ass-kicker of a smoke beer, but still pretty good.
