Love that smoke aroma. LIke an evening at the American Royal. Smooth, thick palate. Like to enjoy this beer on a late Summer, early Fall evening while the bbq grill is still cooking something good. Had it in the bottle instead of a glass so I could not judge the appearance. Plenty of smoke in the flavor here and it is the first thing that is tasted. It was very enjoyable but the "robust" description is overstated. There was a hint of tart hops and smooth malt. There was a zing at first but it faded quickly. Nice, easy drinking beer. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 3, 2006 Good. There is a lot of smoke aroma and flavor in this beer, more than in most American smoked beers. Black with with sediment. Aroma is smoke and malt. Flavor has smoke, meat, wood, and chocolate. Good body; heavier than many porters. muenster (340), Sevierville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 3, 2006 12 oz. Bottle, different than the pictured one. Pours dark brown, with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is like sitting around a campfire, seriously, the smoke is huge. Under the smoke there is a mild sweet toffee-like note. Flavor is sweet malts with a giant wave of smoke in the finish. Only complaint is that the mouthfeel is a bit watery for a porter. Naven (876), Poway, California, USA

Very nice porter. A little dry, as I would have liked to see a little more sweetness, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of smoke. Still very good. I’d like to try this with a Steak. Although, I had Chinese buffett 6 hours ago and im still feeling stuffed to the gills. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

But who cares after I get my big ol’ snoz in the glass and get a whiff of Hormel Bacon bits. Very nice aroma and the taste was exactly what I was hoping for. Nice on the tongue and long lasting smoky flavor. LearninBeer (209), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA

When grilling I can’t think of anything better than a smoked beer. Has a nice maltly taste, light with a sweet roasted flavor. Has a nice finish a little bitter on the back of the tongue but yet a slight creamy feel almost sweet. PhillyBeer2112 (2089), Orange Park, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 20, 2006 Nice beer. Starts with a full campfire smoke aroma, with some molasses and roasted malt in the background. Flavor starts smoky, but on the whole its not a strong smoking, and I quickly adapted to it. What was left was a mildly roasted porter that was a bit too sweet, with molasses and chocolate notes. Smokiness remained as a background contrast. Smooth, slick and highly drinkable despite the sweetness. A good partner to steak.
