The flavor has a rich smokey tone to it, over coffee with a hint of chocolate. And Suttree is right, it was delicious with Jay?s brats! Suttree (2740), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Breakfast in a glass!Nice smoky edge to the flavor, blending nicely with the coffee and chocolate flavors, as well. Went extremely well with Jay’s brats simmered in rauchbier, by the way. Thanks to tronraner for sharing this one! bkochuna (5), Oakland, California, USA does not count | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 5, 2006 subtle burnt chocolate/caramel after taste not very smokey for something with smoked in it’s name, however it sits in the mouth with a distinct taste of wood smoke jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 24, 2006 From a 22oz. brown bomber bottle with a blurb about the porter attached to neck of bottle. Made a good appearance, poured a opaque black coffee color with a large foamy tan head that settled into a thin, semi-clingy, bubbly lacing, good carbonation. Had a tasty, big, deep, smoky roasted malt nose, resembles a well made Rauchbier, with some nuttiness and burnt chocolate malts as well. A smooth, textured, creamy medium bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Complex tasting, a smoky, meaty taste upfront, a molasses sweetness creeps in towards the middle, subtle sweet spiciness, burnt chocolate flavors showing up at the end and a smoky sweet finish with the smokiness lingering in the palate.
There’s a reason why this is a award winner, tasty, balanced and just highly enjoyable. Your welcome Dan!

Starts off with a huge aroma of smoked malts. Pours very dark for a porter, black with crimson edges. Fluffy head dissipates rather quickly. Initially this beer tastes like smokey bacon. After a bit of the bomber, however, the beergoes the way of a nice porter, bitter chocolate, toasted nuts and grain, and pleasant and substantial hoppiness. I am digging this! Thanks James! | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 8, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of sprinkle via trade. Big smokey and woody aroma with some chocolate, light nuttiness, and light roasted grain. Pours a dark brown with no transparency with a large brown head that lasts a minute or so. Quick smokiness up front fades to a dark chocolate and roasted grain middle. Smoke comes back lightly in the finish and then fades leaving a chocolate and roasted grain aftertaste. Strong initial smokiness fades as a drink and becomes more subtle and the chocolate increases. Hints of nuttiness also start become slightly noticeable. oldrtybastrd (1823), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 3, 2006 Pours a deep dark brown with a small reddish brown head. Aromas of liquid smoke, sardines, and firewood. Flavors of chocolate, espresso, and smoke. Not quite as pronounced as Stone or Alaskan, but very good none the less. drainey (231), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Smoky aroma with notes of bacon, chocolate, and some coffee. Flavor was similar, but not as pronounced. Body seemed a little thin to me. Overall, not as bold or impressive as Schlenkerla’s Urbock.
