| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 24, 2005 Final bottle from Santa Pours a lush brown with a nice head of tan and cream. Aroma starts out surprisingly sweet, but once the beer is allowed to sit a spell, the smoke permeates. Flavor is a nice smoke flavor. For some reason, the taste reminds me of "Friday The 13th, Part 2." No, I have no idea why. Nice hints of a campfire and cracklin’ wood are also evident with every sip. Palate is a bit thin, but oh well-- so is the plot for "Friday The 13th, Part 2." A slinky tinge of marshmallow seems to be in the background. A solid smoked beer. Thanks, Santa! beeriodic (61), Longmont, Colorado, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Dec 13, 2005 opaque black/brown, very carbonated. Nice smoke aroma. A sweetish, smoky flavor on the tongue that finishes a bit dryer. The mouthfeel is too thin and not enough "chewiness" or apparent alcohol. Still, it’s nice to find a domestic smoke beer, and this one’s not bad. GeneralGao (3057), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

I don’t know what it looks like because I drank it strainght out of the bottle but it had the expected smoky aroma and a nice flavor with a long-lasting palate. I’ve had better smoked beers but this is definetely drinkable. Ungstrup (15235), Frederiksberg, Denmark

The aroma is sweet roasted - I don’t pick up any smoke. The flavor is sweet roasted with slight notes of raisins - again I don’t pick up the smoke. More smoked malt, please. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 5, 2005 22 oz. Bottle. Oh, yeah. It’s smoky. A pleasant campfire smell when opened, with creasote and a touch of mesquite. Nearly solid black in color, pours out under a brown spongy head. Taste brings to mind smoked Gouda, like a Schenklera. Roasty porter malts, close to stout (would have to be pretty strong to keep up with this smoke). It starts to get a nice cocoa buzz as I go further down. Not much alcohol apparent, but I doubt I’d want to drink a lot of it in one sitting... I could have one every few days, for sure. Another surprise from a tiny industrial-park brewery. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 4, 2005 Poured very dark brown-black with a fizzy head that dissipated quickly. Nose is smoke and wood, maybe. Flavor is mostly woody, with some smoke, roasts, and chocolate. Bitterness was almost non-existent. Sightly watery. Good, but it seems like the flavor ends abruptly, there is some smokiness that lingers, but felt like there was something missing. TAR (2093), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 3, 2005 Updated: Jul 18, 2006Black cherry. Sizzling khaki head holds a tight ring. Invitingly aromatic notes of roasted wood, plums, licorice, burning pipe tobacco, and smoked pork. Silky body frames the fuzzy carbonation. Notably dry, airy, and snappy with roasted wood assertions, upfront. Substantial smoke character, but the malts are fairly depthless early on, due to the airiness. Malts slowly develop to display a multitude of crackery malt softness and tangy, hefty smoke which ease the overall robustness. Chalky dryness and smoky phenols further accentuate the staunch roast bite. Baker’s chocolate and husky, crumbled biscuit malt derivatives creep in late to offset the smoke, while also lending a velvety touch which aids the body. Finishes softer and continually nuanced with gritty char, sealed by an appealing blend of moist tobacco and lightly caramelized pork sweetness. Really welll done, and just shy of stellar.
