12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours dark, dark brown with almost no light passing through and a sizable off-white head that recedes to a cap slowly and leaves patches of lacing. The aroma is a combination of sweet dark chocolate and smoked malts. There may be some peat and wood aroma in there as well, but relatively speaking, it’s a porter with a hint of smoke at this point. But that all changes with the taste. The initial taste is of sweet dark chocolate malts with only a hint of smoke. But that’s just the beginning as the smoke just completely envelopes the palate in the finish with smoked malts, bacon and hickory in the aftertaste. Really nice smoked flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and dry and, you guessed it, smoky on the palate. This is an extremely good smoked beer. I was happy with the aroma but thought that the smoke was a little too understated until the taste hit me. Overall, if you’re a fan of smoked beers, this is a must try.

A leftover from my trip to Missouri. The 12 oz bottle pours black as hell with a nice, thick tan head. Smells like a healthy breakfast of sugary espresso and smoked bacon. Mildly sweet flavor checked by a light roasty bitterness and interesting touch of toasted-rye-bread sourness. That light sour touch is refreshing, despite a healthy puff of smoke. Fairly dry, requesting another sip. I suspect we ought to be quaffing this by the pint, with plates stacked with grilled smoked sausage. Fun beer.

Bottle at PPRBSG09. Pours brown with a small head. Aroma of nice smoked meats. Ahh. Flavor is also quite meaty and smokey, very full-bodied. Great smoked! 8/4/8/4/15 (3.9/5)

Deep brown with a light tan head. Good amount of smoke in the aroma- peat, charred notes, mild chocolate. Fluffy light body- a touch too much carbonation. Smooth flavor with a mild smoky/peat presence that meshes with some dry cocoa underneath and thin roast into the back. Not quite smoky enough, but a decent profile in general.

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering thanks to Eugene. Pours a still dead black with no head, though there are wisps of white bubbles flecking the edges of the glass. Smoke! Lots of it. Glorious smokey aromas with some light sweetness backing it up. Lots of roast character here as well. Very tasty.

Bottle courtesy of IronOrr. Opaque brown to near black pour. Condensed tan head. Burnt wood, roasted malt, smoldering earth and smoked meat in the aroma. Taste is smoked meat, light lactic tartness, roasted malt, bakers chocolate and burnt wood. Some burnt cookie as well. Body is light-medium with a thin carbonation feel. Ends with more light lactic notes, dark fruit, roasted malts, smoked meat, burnt wood and peat. Almost like a smoked milk stout but not quite as lactic.

Bottle. Pours a brown body with a tan head. Smoked malts, with hints of peat and a liquid smoke character. Light woodiness and a full body. Nice.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours dark fudgy brown with tan head. The full aroma emits a nice load of smoke and a mild sense of plastic band aid to go along with a bit of roastiness in the background. The taste has moderate smokiness, a hint or two of plastic, some thick malts and roast. Pretty nice really. An approachable smoked brew.
