More smokey than porteresque, subtle lactic notes and burnt roast. Mild sweetness. The flavors just didn’t meld well. I do like some smoked beers, just not this one. Just not my thing. wheelz843 (211), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 2, 2008 12oz bottle received as an extra from JB175. Thanks! Pours dark brown/black with a nice mocha head. Aroma is overall smoky meat with some light chocolate, coffee and burnt accents. Flavor is similar with nice smoked malts and some chocolate and coffee. Medium body and mouthfeel. Still not a huge smoke beer fan. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Oct 18, 2008 12oz bottle that pours a decent head with a very black body. Much darker than I was expecting. Barely perceptible hint of smoke, some black patent. Disappointing with an extremely low amount of smoke. First taste, "bleh" - sour, heavy metallic, phenolic, on and on and on. Just a virtual symphony of "fail".
Obviously, an infected bottle and will try to re-rate. Pawola22 (748), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2008 On tap at the flying saucer in KC. Pours a thicker looking black body with a creamy, light brown head that lasts quite awhile and stays pretty lacy, leaving a nice swirl on the surface. Aroma is very smoky and fire-pit like. Hints of chocolate, but it definitely reminds me of a bbq. The taste is very similar. Extremely smoky, roasty, and beef jerkeyish. A mesquite bbq for sure. A very soft feel to it with a lighter body. Overall, a good beer with a very unique flavor. I’m a fan of the jerky. 17thfloor (1481), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 6, 2008 Pours a near black garnet with a large foamy tan head. Big smoked beechwood aroma with a hint of creamy chocolate. First taste is tangy, green, metallic, followed by light creamy chocolate with the slightest hint of smoke. This isn’t really a great porter and its not much of a smoked either. Flat watery body. beerbill (1953), Laurel, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of my Summer Secret Santa. Pours very dark brown with a large light brown head that lasted until mid-glass and left a partial layer of foam with each sip. Pleasant aroma of fireplace smoke and some roasted malt. The smokey flavor is more reminiscent of a barbeque than a fireplace, with some roasted malt. Mildly sweet. Fairly smooth but maybe just a tad thin towards the finish. Good brew. michael-pollack (2686), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA
