Commercial Description:
This is a limited edition of our award winning Smoked Porter. This beer was transferred from the fermentation tank five days after it was brewed to a fifty-three gallon freshly emptied bourbon barrel where it was aged for one year. Over that year we carefully adjusted the storage temperature in order to allow the beer to work in and out of the wood of the charred American oak barrel. This process of aging allowed the flavors of the bourbon to blend with the beer, leaving a seamless transition of flavor and aroma with hints of vanilla and caramel. The smoke flavor of the beer takes a backseat to the charred oak of the barrel to make for a perfect blend of smoked porter and bourbon.

Black with a tan head. Aroma is whisky and roasty up front, caramel, smoked malt. Taste is a heavy smokiness, light whiskey, roasty, light chocolate.

2008 Bottle - Tanks Matt! - Pours a dk amber with no head...aroma is slightly antiseptic smokey with a faint hint of oak...flavour was similarly chemical, thin and I did taste a bit of dark fruity malt and bourbon oak, but the band-aid flavour reigned supreme...like a hospital in a bottle...not my thing...

22oz wax-topped bomber. Served in an English pint glass. This beer poured a dark brown with some ruby highlights and a one-finger thick head that hung around for a while. Good lace. The aroma included an even blend of smoke, chocolate, coffee, and caramel. A faint note of whiskey. The flavor was full of molasses, vanilla, lingering smoke, caramelized sugar, plums, and sweet bourbon. Interesting flavor, but somewhat muddled. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had a moderate amount of soft carbonation. A decent beer, but the whiskey, while not overdone, doesn’t really add anything.

Thanks to ilovedarkbeer for this one. Pours a dark, thick brown with a brownish 1 finger head. Smells smoky, with hints of wood and oak. Actual smoke flavor, with burnt malts, coffee, and a hint of sweet whiskey taste. Pleasant amount of carbonation.

Bottle shared by ilovedarkbeer. Pours with a very dark, near black body and a small tan head that leaves good lace. Aroma of smoke, vanilla, bourbon, jerky, campfire, and slight fruity esters. Taste is smokey with soil, cigar ash, char, caramel, jerky, vanilla, a few esters, but not much whiskey. Smooth, albeit somewhat thin mouthfeel, light carbonation.

Is it a smoked or is it a porter.... I dunno but I would lean towards smoked. Nose: sour malt, bacon, chocolate, peat, and wood. Taste is bitter baking chocolate, smoked meat, heavy creme, peat, wood, and lots of vanilla extract and booze. Thing but smooth mouthfeel that is slightly acidic. Overall, not bad. On paper looks better than it is.

22oz. bottle, dated 4/10/08, #753/960, Pappy Van Winkle barrel. Pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head. Aroma is a nice blend of smoke, oak, charred wood, and light bourbon and chocolate. Flavor is more smoke, charred oak, and some espresso. I didn’t really have high hopes for this one, but it’s decent stuff. A bit thin on a palate and not a lot of depth, but overall not too shabby. If I had to guess based on other reviews, I think this barrel is one of the better ones used, and some age probably helped out as well.

Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing! Deep dark brown with an off-white ring. Complex aroma of wood, smoke, meat, burnt malt. Big smoky meat taste, with burnt malt, wood, and whiskey, with a hint of chocolate. Lingering smoky-burnt wood flavors. Very tasty.
