Commercial Description:
"First brewed in September of 2001. The name is a play on the 300th anniversary of Yale University - a tercentennial - and the fact that the beer is brewed with 100% centennial hops. It was the first place beer at the 2002 Toronado Festival and also took the best of show for bottle conditioned beers at the Chicago Real Ale Festival." - Tom Nickel, Head Brewer.

This barley wine pours with a deep amber body topped by a thick head with tons of lacing. The aroma is bitter and hoppy with alcohol esters, a strong pine note, some cinamon, and an underlying foot note. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter with piney notes, slight caramel notes and a touch of alcohol. Full bodied, tingly on the tongue and slightly dry.

2001 bottle from Tom himself. Yummy... POurs a dark, deep brown in color with aromas of fruit and brown sugar. Flavors of evergreens and brown sugar again, with a slight chocolate feel. Maybe the best barleywine i've had yet.

Pretty intense beer. I had a pint cask conditioned this afternoon on an empty stomach. It hit me pretty hard. Alcahol was prevalent and was a bit hoppy. Very good.

Tap @ Toronado Barley Wine Festival. Dark brownish color with a ruby tint and a light brown head. Rich malts with some chocolate and vinous fruits.

Hoppy yet creamy aroma coming from a dark maroonish/brown color..the flavor was piney and resinish..with hints of strawberries and mint..with a semi-creamy mouthfeel with the hops a little too strong for the creaminess to show through...piney bitter finish..good drinkable barley-wine, hiding alcohol well..but nothing to write home about..re-rate 2001 version drank on draft in the end of 2004: Huge head and massive lacing...oaky sour aroma bursting with fermented fruit...sour, funky, and dark malt flavors...shall i say funky and nutty and quite complex.

Powerful would be an understatement. Hot damn could this stuff bring it. The 1701 sounded historica, so i figured i'd try it, and it was solid. It was swirling alot of flavors at me, but in the end finished good, and thats alright with me.
