BobbyAnalog (19), California, USA Oct 29, 2009 The color is like that of a syrupy oil pan. An interesting silky head, copper in complexion, boils up at the top of the glass. The smell is much like huffing a paper bag full of stale air, to put it nicely as I can. Taste wise, the stout is teeming with a rich, dark chocolate finish. Notes of coffee hover ominously in the background of the beer, but the overall impression is a forgettable one. More like an aged chocolate shake than a suitable beer. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Oct 16, 2009 Bottled. Dark color, medium brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, bit rye. Bit milky creamy chocolat taste. Some licorice, slight vanilla. Quite enjoyable. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Oct 15, 2009 Bottle@UDRM. Tnx JBrus! Flavourful and complex yet well balanced. daknole (2805), Plantation, Florida, USA Oct 8, 2009 Nearly black pour. Very small tan head. Aroma of chocolate covered caramel and a hint of worthers original candies. Flavor is a tad roasty with caramel, chocolate and a hint of coffee. GandGKevin (183), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Sep 23, 2009 22oz Bottle. Pours black with a smallish tan head which disappears quickly. Aromas of roasted coffee and chocolate. Flavors are dark chocloate and a little caramel. Overall a decent stout. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 10, 2009 22oz bomber poured into a tulip.
Pours pitch black with a medium-sized tan head that shows very good staying power and solid lacing.
The aroma is all about the dark, sweet malts with tons of bakers chocolate and some roasted coffee. Not crazy complex but an excellent nose for this style.
The taste wasn’t quite as solid as the nose and there is an overarching burnt malt bitterness that gets a little distracting. If you can get past the burnt character, there is semisweet chocolate and some spent espresso grounds, which just accentuates the bitterness, especially in the finish.
The mouthfeel is silky smooth and extremely dry and bitter with the roasted malts clinging to the palate.
This is a very good export stout that I think would be great if the bitterness was ramped down a touch. I do like the big sweet chocolate aroma as it’s a bit different for a dry stout. Overall, very tasty.
