MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Apr 29, 2007 I had this bitter at Chaucer’s Pub in London, Ontario. Deep ruby colour with orange hues. Pours a gian rocky white head, leaving plenty of pretty lace. Very fruity aroma off the start (plum), very malty with a good dose of hops. Biscuit and bread as well. Maybe a touch of cherry. The flavour profile is a nice of balance between the sweetness from the malts and a bitter almost piney flavour from the hops. FInishes creamy, buttery maybe, with nice bite from the hopping. yalnikim (776), Wellington, New Zealand Apr 26, 2007 Tasted 26/04/2007. 500ml bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Pours an almost bright Doc Marten Cherry Red, with a very light tan airy head. Delightfully fruity nose: raisiny port notes mingle with a sweet whiff of lemonade. A hint of caramel, especially in the empty glass. Very soft in the mouth, and quite light, with just a touch of barley sweetness, more fruity esters and a toasty dry finish. Oaky notes linger on the palate, and I’m not pulling your leg here! Bitterness is very subdued, hop flavour almost non-existent besides a mild peppery spice. This one has really stood up to the travel and the shelf time. Excellent ESB, with all the complexity of a good single malt whisky. It really makes me want to have another look at their Port Stout. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Apr 9, 2007 A Sim rate (Cask at Planet Thanet): Aroma of spicy breadcrumbs. Parsley. Paprika. More spice. Bitter finish that is tangy and slightly citric but over all quite savoury. Nejhleader (924), Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 7, 2007 amber body, had a bit of a fruity almost apple taste to it. A little bit of a hop presence. tomthompson89 (1460), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 27, 2007 nice bottle conditioned beer, amber colour. lotsa rocky white head, nice lacing. Good Malty character, slight hops, kinda nutty. Great bitter. Had at smokeless joes doubelknv3 (559), Illinois, USA Mar 10, 2007 Updated: May 19, 2007Cloudy amber with lite head. Notes of hops, malts, & furit in the aroma. Balance flavour of malts & hops with notes of roasted nuts. Full bodied with a mild bitter finish. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 5, 2007 Updated: Dec 6, 2007This is the same as the pale ale, as it’s labelled in the US, to appeal to that market. It is a bitter, and a very good one. A fruity tasty bitterness, greapefruit from Challenger and Goldings hops and lots of good comlex malting. Smooth, great lacing. Strong on the palate.
andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Feb 15, 2007 16.9oz bottle. pours about like a nut brown with a ruby presence. head is quite firm, with nice retention. smells pleasant. i’m beginning to think they’re going for a darker pale here. hops on the nose, as well as a field of wheat and a little malt. tastes of caramel, hops (can taste the Golding hops), and finishes with a lingering apple taste and a seperate slight bitterness. well balanced, tasty, and drinkable. noticable lacing as well here. nothing bad here, though it’s not extremely discernable either. happy drinking!
