Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands Jun 21, 2005 this is a very nice bitter ale, due to bottle condition i think. murky copper colored with a thin, regular off-white head. aroma: yeast, malty, bit caramel, citrus and flowers maybe. taste: yeast, citrus(grapefruit), roasted malt, gooseberries, sourish and bitter. finish is quite long and bitter. thin/medium body. nicely balanced, tasty ale. Oakes (8057), gone rambling, Vietnam Jun 19, 2005 Murky amber appearance. Lively aroma of passion fruit, caramel, brown sugar, plum. The flavour, however, is underwhelming (it may not have been a word when they wrote that song but it is now). It’s got a slightly dusty, vaguely malty character to it. One of the most annoying things in beer is when it smells great and then tastes like hardly anything at all. That’s what I’m getting here. PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2005 Marcello’s Wine Market, Baton Rouge, La. - 500 ml bottle. Medium orange pour with a luxuriously thick creamy head and thick lacing. Had the same fizzy problem others have had - I attributed it to a bit of frozeneness due to the over cooled hotel mini fridge! Fruity aroma, some floral notes, very fresh. Delectable bitter flavor. Sweet and bitter at the same time with some mild citrus notes and hints of nuts. Very clean smooth mouthfeel. This is the knd of bitter that I could drink all night sitting in an English Pub. More please! DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 14, 2005 Bottle from Whole Foods, Raleigh. Gusler, your review of this one made me laugh my ass off! Pours dark straw with a gargantuan head. In fact, this one started fizzing over the bottle as soon as I opened it. Aroma of perfumy florals, hopcit, some grassy hints. Tastes very spicy, with a firm hopcit and fruit presence. Unique. Medium on the palate. Finishes hoppy, fruity, and with a dryness and smokyness that makes it stand out in the ESB realm, although my bottle states that it is a pale ale. Whatever you call it, it is very good, and for my money, worthy of repeated drinking. My glass looked like a milkshake glass when I was finished. noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA May 25, 2005 Poured wonderful clear reddish-gold with really big snow-white head that faded fairly quick but left exceptional lacing. Aromas were bread, malt, straw, and herbs. Taste was moderately sweet but well balanced with a malty fulness and a truck lad of bitter herbal hops. No fruitiness here, this ale is all grain and hops. Mouthfeel is just right. An excellent ale. A bit filling for a session beer, nonetheless it definitely a must-try. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA May 23, 2005 The beer emerges from the 500ml brown bottle a bemused rusty orange color with a mount Everest sized frothy light tan head and a bazillion tons of sediment, well maybe only the size of K-2 and just a ton or two of goodies floating in suspension, with the left over lace a thick blanket to cover the glass. Nose has an unmistakable woody aroma, fresh malts, a bit soapy, fresh and clean, the start is nicely malted and lightly sweet with a light to medium feel at the top. Finish is pesky in its acidity, the hops ever so spicy and pleasant, very dry and long lasting aftertaste, what better treat after a long day of drudgery and the ride home in this 106-degree heat amongst some of the worst drivers on God’s green earth. FezMonkey (268), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA May 18, 2005 Golden color with a large frothy head. Hoppy aroma. You can taste the hops but they aren’t overpowering. Smooth finish.
