The Eldridge Pope Royal Oak was one of the first beers I truly enjoyed during my initial intro to craft beers, so it’s interesting to revisit this. Pours translucent orange amber, topped with a thin tan head. Sweet caramel aroma, with notes of fruit and nuts. Flavor is fairly sweet, with fruit, caramel, hazelnut, earth and mild citrus. Medium bodied and incredibly drinkable. Straightforward, drinkable and very refreshing. #800 Gethinbeer (1006), Nova Scotia, Canada

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jun 22, 2004 It’s wild to see this again after so many years. This was one of the first English ales I ever had. I remember being captivated by the portrait of King Charles II on the label. The label they’ve used on this beer’s reissue is not captivating. NOr, frankly, is the beer. While the aroma is quite nice and earthy, the flavor is dirty and harsh. Tastes like a rather crappy bock I just brewed. I’d like to know where the harshness originates: is it some rough hop bitterness (rather than that clean piercing bitterness found in American ales) or if it’s some manner of rusty tasting malt, created by too many esters. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jul 10, 2007 Hazy orange look with a huge ligt orange head. Aroma is very toffee like, with notes of butter and something bitter roased. The hobs gives it a minor grassy scent, but i still think the malts are more dominating in the aroma. The flavor however is mostly bitter, acctually not much sweetness at all. The mouth aroma reveals a deeper hob profile than the aroma, along with some notes of toasted bread. Finish is bitter towards harch, and sticks for awhile. Rockinout (946), Kent, Ohio, USA
