Commercial Description:
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

2008 Vintage: Pours deep mahogany body with no head to speak of and very little carbonation. Nose has masses of caramel, toffee, raisins & licorice. Palate translates very nicely. Signififcant sweetness upfront before instense resiny hops and abv combine to drive a long spicy finish. So damn good! Cant wait to get some age on it.

40th year vintage. Medium dark pour with a light head. Toffee, figs and molasses in the nose. Sweet dark fruit matched with an earthy hops bite. Alcohol very present. Would love to try again in a few years.

best barley wine ive ever had delicious aroma of dried fruits, alcohol and a little wood; delightful appearance, dark amber color, small head and almost no lacing; in the palate, a medium-full body, lots of dried fruits and warming from the high alcohol content; lively carbonation, alcoholic finish

Bottle 25cl. Colour is dark amber, there is no carbonation at all. It smells as an heavy duppelbock such as Primator 24. The taste is very malty with ’bitter orange’, licorice, and caramel aroma. The end is bitter with major presence of hops flavor wich goes to herbal perfumes. An heavy roast and smoked aroma remains on the tongue after the drink.

Safra 2007.

2005 bottle. Taste of mixed Porto, herbal liquer and bramble (cupid) wine. Strong alcohol taste mixed with sweet caramel-nutty malt syrupy aroma. Subtle fruit aroma - raisins and plum. Warm heavy mouthfeel. Intense smell of caramel, nuts and burnt sugar. Dark body. No carbonation.

Acquired via trade with Matt7125. 2008 vintage. Pours a plummy orange colour with a small ring of bubbles. Aromas of soft fruits, some strawberry, caramel, black licorice, and spice. The palate is a big hammer of flavor. Malt, malt and malt... It’s malty!. Dark fruits and black licorice on the front palate. Soft fruits and caramel in the mid with a lingering licorice candy. Finish is long and soft. Toffee and spice with a hint of oak and vanilla. Mouth feel is surprisingly effervescent for a barley wine. Really nice, I really want to put one of these away to see what it will taste like in a few years.
