Commercial Description:
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

bottle vintage 2005- pours flat, 0 cloudy brown .carbonation, nose is big and thick, peaches, butterscotch. really earthy. caramel. its so dense and telling of the ale itself. mouthfeel is as syrupy as mead. tastes very honeyed. some spices. lots of alcohol warming. some sweet portlike quality about it. perfect after dinner drop. slight lemon. wonderful first class classic. honeyed black tea taste comes through as well with some hop resonance. and a subtle tartness. excellent.

2004 Bottle. Pours murky brown with no head. Surprisingly vinous aroma, alcohol, caramel, grape, and cream. Also some unappealing sweat smell. Big bold flavors; caramel, smoke, fruit, alcohol. Unfortunately, its not balanced at all. This is just not ready, still needs many years.

Bottle of the ’05. Pours a distinctly cloudy orange with a tall white head. The aroma is surprisingly fruity with pineapple, some brandy, licorice, some kind of cream or something. It’s pretty unique but very balanced and assertive. Palate is pretty heavy with loads of fruit flavor. Mellow citrus is noticed first and a slow transition to darker vinous notes occurs. The finish is juicy and sweet with a grainy quality accompanied by berries, maybe apple. This is actually quite tasteful and a bold treat.

Bottle. Very rich fruity grape aroma. Merky amber appearance with a thin lace that sticks to the end. Smooth texture. Fruit flavour, liquorice. Very tasty indeed for the alcohol content. Very enjoyable beer.

2005 tasted mid 2008. Murky brown. Aroma: woody, smoked, leather, alcohol, lots of malt.. Taste: Warm and smooth, vinous and strong. Sipping not drinking brew. Salty. A year or 2 more and it would be spot on, I think.

Pours a caramel brown with no head and very little carbonation. Smoky aroma with rich mollasses, brown sugar, and some fruit. The tastes are plenty and include at least pineapple, honey, ginger and licurice. The palate is thick like honey, warm and smooth.

2007. Dark amber color no head. No carbonation whatsoever. Alcohol aroma, some malt and caramel. Strong taste of pineaple, barley sugar and hop. A lot of bitterness and not much sweeteness. Full bodied.
