Commercial Description:
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

2004 #11840 This bottle poured a hazy brownish with red high lights. Almost no head at all. Really wish I would have aged this more, but the wife, anti-beer and all, thought it looked cool, and suggested it now. Anyway, the nose was wood and sherry and port. Taste was strong alcohol and prunes? or should I say dried plums, and deffiatly oak. Sweet as well, and strong. This will only get better. Major Thanks to SHP555 and mystery swap 2.0!!!

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a small off-white head that lasts leaving minimal lacing. Aroma of port wine, sherry, oak, alcohol, caramel, and cognac. Taste is the same as aroma with a very strong alcohol warmth, notes of dark fruit, and a strong bitterness. Full sweet mouthfeel that is a little cloying. A good beer but I think it needs at least a decade off cellaring to smooth out all the flavors.

[Sampled in 2003 as a newcomer.] Not used to taste "things" like that I was surprised that a beer could taste in this way. Portnotes, bitterness and oaky in a way that I never before had tasted something. I’ll rerate it one day, surely. Also to taste it in the right way.

2003 Bottle #01051. Poured a deep amber red body with a nice thin head. Aroma is of dried fruit and a brandy like scent. Flavor is sweet with dried fruit, currants, plums and a very noticable alcohol taste, as this was very young yet. Very calming beer, this one exceeded my expectations. Can’t wait to try some of the ones I’ve been cellaring.

Dark nutty brown, ruby color, no head. Cookies, barley and rye bread in the nose. Bready, portwineous, hints of rye and licorice. Some hops, dark fruits, wood and alcohol in the aftertaste. Bitterish and salty. Nice dessert beer, but not so complex as expected, propably needs a couple of years in the cellar.
