Commercial Description:
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

2006 bottle bought from a liquor store in early 2009. Aroma is molasses, oak, and smoke. Flavor is extremely sweet with a touch of bitterness, but not hop bitterness. Hardly any carbonation and absolutely no head. Alright, but didn’t blow me away.

Bottle, thanks to one of the few from Natifest ’09. Pours a rich, hazy brown color with a very small head. Aroma is prunes and sweet malts. Notes of other dark fruit, apricots, molasses, port wine, and brown sugar come out. On the palate, a nice alcohol burn comes out. The flavor brings out the port flavor and also brings out a slight apple or pear flavor. Very interesting beer. Something I could not drink everyday, but stilll very, very good.

Had vintage 08. Deep caramel in colour. Aroma of sweet grapes, caramel, port. Super sweet start, brilliantly bitter finish. Apricots, brown sugar, molasses. Very well crafted.

Pours hazy brown with no head. Complex aroma of honeysuckle, berry, plum, dark fruit, alcohol, molasses, apple, and vanilla. Feels thin but the flavor is very bold, mostly molasses and ripe fruits with alcohol. Very smooth beer, finishes with a slight bitter toasted malt.

2007 No. P09398. Pours a cola color body with almost no head or carbonation. Smells of toffee, roasted, dates, prunes, apple butter. Flavor is the same. Palate is thick, a little hot from alcohol, some sour and bitterness. Complex.
