Commercial Description:
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

2007 No. P09398. Pours a cola color body with almost no head or carbonation. Smells of toffee, roasted, dates, prunes, apple butter. Flavor is the same. Palate is thick, a little hot from alcohol, some sour and bitterness. Complex.

Vintage 2006, #5933. Dark cola pour with very thin, almost not there, light brown head. Fruity aroma, plums, raisons, alcohol, sweetness. Taste is smooth- malt, dark fruit flavors, alcohol. The sweetness is mellow. I can taste the alcohol lingering in my mouth after the first sip is taken. This is a very nice beer. Worth searching out for more. The taste gets better as it warms in the glass.

Vintage 2007. No head almost whatsoever. I was worried at first that we may have gotten a bad bottle. However, glancing through other reviews confirms that this is pretty regular. Huge complex nose of ripe and dried exotic fruits. Plums, dates, etc... with plenty of alcohol. Smells more like brandy or cognac than a beer.Wonderfully potent nose. Gentle on the palette with a great mouth feel. Alcohol finds balance when you taste this ale. Not as over the top as I would have expected.

Received via trade from Zach 8270, thanks Zach! Wanted something boozy tonight, this seemed like it would fit the bill. 2003 vintage. Big time nose, creme brulee, lots of ripe dark fruit, plums, cherries, chocolate. Brown appearance with orange highlights and very little head or lacing. Initially a very creamy feel to the palate. Graham crackers, sugar daddies, sweetness. Must be lots of hops as the sweetness is not overdone, but can’t really taste or feel the hops nor the alcohol. Very very nice. Now I think I’d like to get an older vintage.

wasn’t sure how long this brew had to age (up to 25 years, what?) I cracked a 2007 and was prepared for it to be a lillte brash. To my surprise it wasn’t. The nose on this beer is awesome. smells like a basket of fruit. Plums specifically. Little to no carbonation allowed for a great mouthfeel. Very smooth, no alcohol burn. Taste is sweet toffee with brandy like fruitiness. Really like this one.

vintage 2008 Pours a thick dark chocolate with very thick head that looks like it is the consistancy of egg whites. Aroma is a sweet liquor semi-bourbon or rum.Taste is extremely nutty with incredibly sweet nuts. Body is light and so is carbonation.
