ElGaucho (1721), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Feb 15, 2003 Co-winner of the traveling Showshoe Award at Winterfest in St. Paul, MN on Feb. 8 (along with Cywrens Song Chocolate Raspberry Stout from Hops Restaurant & Brewery - Eden Prairie, MN) for best of show. I was less than enamored by this brew. It had a hard alcohol aroma (vermouth?). Very sweet to the taste; the alcohol is not overbearing. Not bad, just too sweet.
detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Jan 22, 2007 The beer is a beautifully clear auburn brown that really shows off some reddish copper color when held up to the light. About half an inch of light tan foam recedes to a thin ring in a minute or so, but the etching at the bottom of the Chimay glass keeps a steady stream of tiny bubbles slowly rising to the surface. Scant lacing. Aroma of candied fruit and a little bit of bread.
I like the flavor - toasted and biscuit malt, light candi sugar, and a tangy fruitines that reminds me a little of gooseberry. A hint of black tea tannin in the finish and into the aftertaste. Medium body, gentle carbonation, quite a pleasant beer. incutrav (505), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA Jan 22, 2007 Like the name for sure, but didnt like the beer as much. Not really my style of beer in the first place. Once again, a bit to sweet for my tastes, but still drinkable. footbalm (1211), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jan 22, 2006 Not the Best of Show this year at Winterfest but still not bad as there was some coriander or some spice and some Barley Wine characteristice with fruits and caramel. MilkmanDan (1937), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Jan 15, 2006 Clear deep copper. Nose sweet and spicy, lots of caramel and candy sugars. Tastes of candied raisins, bit nutty, lots of sugars. Some fruitiness, berries. Strong stuff, but good. Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jan 7, 2006 Growler poured to the very top, good job, guys.
Sweet caramel malt spills immediately from the aroma...on further inspection, wide-open, earthy, dark fruits, raisins, nuts, nice...sweet and lovely...
Deep brown color, with burgundy highlights, with nice, if short -lived, fizzy brown head.
Taste: sweetness again, big, rich malt, caramel and mellow fruit, light spice, ...and absolutely delcious. Some grit in the texture, some give and play, a tasty dance on the tongue.
Fullish body, sweet, fruity finish...solid.
Might lack a touch of complexity, but it’s simplicity is reward enough, if the flavor is this fine. An easy-drinking dubbel, impossible to stop drinking it.
I like this quite a lot, it’s a respectable dubbel, and I’m happy that the first beer I’ve reviewed out of the city of St. Cloud, MN is such a gutsy and tasty one.
