| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 25, 2007 bottle - Pours clear dark brown with a thin tan head. The nose is dark malt and a hint of spice. The flavor is sweet caramel malt and the finish is also rather sweet with just a touch of hops presence. This beer is easy going and a decent quaff, but didn’t strike me as anything special. Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 21, 2007 Bottle courtesy of dorwart. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Smells of dark chocolate, caramel, hints of spice. Tastes of sweet chocolate, caramel, some dark fruit. Finish yields fresh sliced apples, some molasses and a hint of bitterness. Not sure why the scores are so low. This is a pretty solid beer. smartlung (154), Valrico, Florida, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 7, 2007 I like this unique brew. It is a solid performer, and incorporates a good flavor profile. It is slightly sweet, well rounded, and has that slight bitterness that is unusual. It is complex. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 2, 2007 This is probably my favorite dunkel, though it’s certainly not a typical representation of the style as I’ve encountered it. The pour is a very dark ruby tinted chestnut and yields a mid-sized, creamy, slowly diminishing light tan head. The body is translucent; lacing is jutting out like bursts of lava from a volcanic eruption and the head never fully dissipates. The nose is lightly roasty and has hints of the fire-burned malt, resulting in hints of scorch and smoke. Strong notes of carmel and lesser notes of coffee beans are joined by bready hints. A subtle, underlying banana and toffee sweetness is expelled late, with a backdrop of sourdough bread and quaint elusions of caraway and juniper. A feast for the eyes and olfactory senses, the glow from the glass trickles out in the form of a very pleasant and individualistic aroma. The first sip is spicy and very bready, with minute yeastiness poking through. Sweet caramel and toasted grains comprise the bulk of the flavor. A minor astringency settles into the mix and evenly disperses malt, with the aid of velvety and moderate carbonation. Light smoke fades in and out, barely noticeable. Peanut brittle and pepper are interesting additions. The finish is sweet and caramelly, then toasted and roasty scorched grains and sour breadiness linger on. the mouthfeel is medium-full within the typicalities of the stlye, medium and clumpy overall. Very drinkable and relaxed, this beer is one I’ve returned to many times when I crave something dark and charismatic but not powerful or heavily roasty. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2007 Remarkably sweet but with a light flyover of crisp continental hops. Slight bitterness lingers in the back of the throat. Intense coffee and caramel notes, highlited by a strong roasted nuttiness. Creamy, silky palate. Rich mouthfeel. Nice complex array of flavors, great mouthfeel. A well made, enjoyable beer.

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Nov 23, 2007 500ml bottle. Pours deep brown with a mocha colored head. Nose of some soured grains and lemon juice along with a light bready roast note. Spicy and peppery on the palate, with a lingering toast and bread note, and again a sweet lemon citrus-type bite. The body is very thin but that doesn’t hinder this beer as much as the almost moldly lemon juice overtone. Very strange.
