Pours balck with a tan head. Smells of chocolate and cherries. Nutty and chocolate flavors. One of my all-time favorites.

500 ml bottle, from BevMo LaJolla. Pours dark brown and nearly opaque, with orange highlights and a large beigey head. Aroma of molasses, dark cocolate, cherries, herbs, brandy and a deep roastiness. Flavor of prune, fudge, blackberry, floral hops, brandy notes, coffee, brown sugar and herbs. Full body, silky smooth and gentle carbonation. Quite enjoyable.

nearly room temp!!! pours a very dark brown with red highlights. fluffy tan head that really wants to stick around until i’m done and leaves a trail inside the glass. aromas of deeply roasted malts, cinnamon, dark dried fruits, mild coffee and chocolate. flavor is everything mentioned with some molasses and smoke. starts with a light acidity and finishes with a small amount of bitterness. medium bodied. sweetness is really overdone and detracts the overall enjoyabilty.

Bottle. Aroma starts with heavy malt notes of toasted, dark chocolate and faint black coffee. Moderate hops smells of herbs and resin, and moderate yeast notes of dough and leather with dark dried fruits in the background. Head is large, between creamy and rocky, light brown with good lacing and mostly lasting. Color is brown/black. Bold flavors that start moderately sweet and lightly acidic then the long finish is moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium bodied, creamy with soft carbonation and a slightly alcoholic and dry finish. It would be a shame not to let this beer warm a bit before enjoying. I couldn’t believe the complexity in both the aroma and taste. This is a fantastic Baltic Porter, the best I’ve had to date and the 500ml bottle is a perfect serving size.

500 ml bottle

I picked this up to see what a true baltic porter is like. I have had quite a few ’imperial porters’ and want to see how they stack up against the real thing. As it turns out this is better than some and worse than others. It makes me want to give the Southampton Imperial Porter a shot in the near future. My only real gripe was the price - at $3.99 it was a little more than I felt it should have been but it was still worth the cost.

Aroma / Appearance - A short lived sandy head soon folded into the medium black body. A sheet of clear lacing slid down the sides as I took sips but left no sediment. Sweetness (like cinnamon) greeted the nose on the first sniff followed by charcoal, black licorice and malts. I wasn’t sure what to make of this so I kept an open mind.

Flavor / Palate - Carbonation comibned with smoke, malts and cocoa washed over the tongue. It felt a little thin but not too flawed. It lightly flows down the throat without sticking to anything. The finish of brown sugar was a nice touch. The best way to get an idea of what this beer tastes like (without actually trying it) is to imagine drinking a day old Pepsi at league night of a smoky bowling alley. It’s drinkable yet there are just a fwe things that keep it below that 4.0 mark.

Pours a virtually opaque black with a great tan head that sticks around. Nose is sweet like chocolate would be, but is overall mild and has no extreme character. Flavor is very smooth, but at the same time is very sweet. I want to say it is bordering on too sweet, if it has not already crossed that line. Slight malt tones underneath all that sugary sweetness. Mouthfeel is low with carbonation. Drinkable, sure. But for some the extreme sweet might be a turn off.

Industrial-like aroma with some fruit. Deep amber color with a slight head. A very astringent flavor with not much else coming through.
