Beige head. Black strong in alcohol and rich on the palate with a crisp and slightly bitter whisky and coffee roast finish. neepsntatties (281), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 15, 2009 Bottle courtesy of "hannont". Colour... very dark brown with some light shining ’round the edges (when held to the light) and no head. Nose... dark raisins, brown sugar and garden bonfire. palate... smoky, phenolic, tangy, coating, rustic, wet earth, tobacco, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate and a lengthy finish. swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Sep 21, 2009 Big thanks to Craig aka cgarvieuk for this gift. Enjoyed in an alley by The Halfway House, Edinburgh. 2006 bottle. Deep dark black pour, khaki head. Boozy, roasty, hints of soy, chocolate, dark fruit. Like a boozy Rolo. Very good HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 9, 2009 ’06 Bottle, courtesy of Gunhaver. Poured pitch black with a thin brown head. Malty nose with notes of chocolate, plum, rasin, vanilla, and oak. Nice full, creamy body with soft carbonation. Flavor is sweet, roasted malt, nice notes of dark fruit and oak. Vanilla and a slight touch of anise were also present. Very balanced and very easy to drink. Great brew, thanks Geiger! Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Sep 5, 2009 Big thanks to Gunhaver for sharing this 2006 vintage. Wow, the British take a moment or two away from churning out bitter to produce a mindnumbing brix brashing beer. Cheers! Pours deep darkness with no head. The aroma has rich chocolate and fudge brownie mixing with oak and a modest sense of booze. Smells like “yum” to me. The taste is rich chocolate and creamy moist fudge brownie moving into notes of caramel and sweet malts which culminates in a bit of booze. The booze helps dry it out some into the finish. Awesome brew. Dedollewaitor (3625), Odense, Denmark Sep 4, 2009 27,5cl Bottle. Trade with Fonefan. Pours pitch black with a small bubbly head that quickly disappears. Nose is so yummi that I hardly can descibe it. Complex and deep. Dark roasted coffee, bourbon, oak, chocolate, vanilla. Smooth and soft palate. A bit of soy. Low carbonation. Slick and oily. The alcohol is very well hidden and integrated. A big beer! tpd975 (95), Riverview, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2009 Thanks to gunhaver for providing the bottle.
A: Pours a rich shade of dark brown or light black depending on how you look at it. The head is on the smaller side, with just a touch of lace.
S: Oak and bourbon bounce out from the start, not overpowering though. Vanilla, roasted malt and molasses are there as well in equal amounts.
T: Nice dark fruit flavors up front. Roast, molasses sweetness carry you through the middle. The oak and vanilla along with some chocolate come in the finish.
M: On the fuller side of medium, nice subtle carbonation.
D: Really good, probably the beer English beer I have ever had.
