emacgee (1135), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jun 8, 2008 Sampled at the Blues and Brews festival. Pours a hazy golden orange with a thin head. Nice bourbon and oak in the nose, sweet, light citrus and candy, alcohol. Bourbon and oak prominent in the flavor, spicy, vanilla. Decent mouthfeel and a warm finish.
Collint (348), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Sep 29, 2008 Sampled at Brewgrass 2008. I saw this one and had to try it even though I had my wrist band cut off. Pours a copper brown with a light brown head. Aroma is super thick hoppy oaky. American style barley wine with a ton of oak. super sweet. Very overpowering, i need to try this one again. brentfeesh (937), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Sep 23, 2008 Sampled at Brewgrass 2008. I saw this at Brusin Ale’s for $20.00 a pop…A bit too much IMO. Poured copper colored on draft with a frothy head. TONS of oak and vanilla in the aroma. Once you get through that you can detect a slight buttery hint. But the aroma is really overpowering. Boozy is the first thing that comes to mind when you take a sip. It’s fairly hot. Plenty of wood that is out of balance in my opinion. A bit of fruity caramel sweetness that gives way to a dry woody and earthy finish. Full body brew that starts creamy and ends semi-dry. Suttree (2355), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 22, 2008 Updated: Sep 25, 2008First of all, it smelled great, as most bourbon barrel aged beers do. Flavor was, well, bourbon. If you like bourbon, you’re in luck. The beer character was definately there, but was obscured by the bourbon. Certainly a sipper. Sampled at Brewgrass 2008. Re-rate, sort of - the aroma kinda skewed the score a bit high, it’s just a bit too overbearing to really enjoy a lot. Jmichael (582), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Sep 22, 2008 the assistant brewer at French Broad told me I had to get to this one, so I did. Defintily a complex barley, three years behind it with age in oak bourbon barrels, that is TLC. Great body and complexity. Was a wonderful beer. I had a Brewgrass so the atmosphere was loud and hot, wish I could try in a cooler quiter environment to really get down on this Barley nearbeer (1334), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 11, 2008 Updated: Sep 27, 2008650 ml, 2007 vintage. Deep ruby-copper with a small creamy head that lasts and leaves some lacing. Aroma is luscious caramel, chocolate, vanilla, oak and bread pudding. Flavors start similarly, with a hint of cherry but becomes nearly overpowered by much more apparent whiskey and oak. Medium body is mostly smooth, a little to the dry side and alcohol warming. Good, but maybe the "long maturation" should be shortened a bit to offer other than strong bourbon and oak flavors. Not worth $17/bottle.
