| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 16, 2006 From notes 5/17/03:
Dark dark dark chocolate color. So dark that light just fights to peek through the edges. Tan head dusted with cocoa sits proudly on top. The lacing is magnificent, itself fighting the physics of light beams and their quest to peek through. Thick creamy lacing.
The aromas are mainly a roasted malt, bitter chocolate variety, with the added bonus of an earthy hoppiness too. The taste is more complex than I imagined going into it. Starts rather bland (which made me instantly sad for all it had going for it initially) but them the magic happens! More of the roasted malts and chocolate, followed by more of the earthy hops soaked in bitter coffee. True to its name, a little bit of "hickory stick" involved too. Earthy. Definitely an aftertaste beer. Most of the flavor party occurs towards the end and then after the tasting.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2006 Draught at Union Jack’s. This is another in a series of beers I have had a million times but have yet to rate. The pint pours a black amber with one finger of well-lacing tan head. The aroma is roasty with hints of caramel. The flavor is cold coffee, a little bit of maple syrup, and a fireplace finish. There is ambient hop bitterness throughout. Not very creative, but a good solid stout. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 18, 2006 Black, but not opaque. The head is a light khaki that takes a while to fade. The aroma is surprisingly hoppy, some sort of c-hop dominant. Good coffee and dark chocolate. Good mix of fresh hop flavor and roasty malt flavors. Yum. GeneralGao (3071), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 15, 2006 Draft at Sunspot Restaurant in Knoxville. Very black in the glass with a frothy tan head that mostly lasted and left good lacing. Sweet malt aroma. The flavor was of chocolate, coffee, roasted, and a slight hoppy bitter. Medium to full body that leaves a slight bitter aftertaste. NachlamSie (1647), Tennessee, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 16, 2005 Updated: Aug 4, 2008draught. This is even better than I remember. The pour is fairly black with a tall tan head. Nice strong aroma with dark roasted coffee, smoke, raisins, and hickory. This hickory presence is so strong in the flavor it makes me question whether or not the recipe actually includes it. Mouthfeel is pretty coating. A flat wall of bittersweet dark chocolate lingers with a cutting hop presence. It doesn’t reach the level of a huge imperial stout. It’s more like a huge regular or perhaps a dry stout. Very good anyway.
[August 4, 2008]
On tap at UJ’s .Pours very dark, near black with an everlasting tan head. The aroma is heavily roasted, almost burned smelling. Hints of espresso, bacon, hickory, dark chocolate are present. THe mouthfeel is quite reasonable, sticky and full but not huge. The flavor brings more bittersweet qualities of espresso, soy sauce, dark chocolate, and a meaty, ashy finish. This is delightful. I disagree with the imperial stout classification here. Definitely reminds me of something along the lines of Shakespeare stout or Kalamazoo stout. Quite good.
