IMHO, get rid of trying to call this a russian imperial and just call it a stout. When you call it a russian imperial, I want to compare it to other imp. stouts like Black Choclate, Storm King, Grant’s and Rogue - and that makes this beer score bad - when it’s really not a bad stout. Good roasted aroma with hints of berries in the nose. Light bodied and moutfeel is the biggest drawback - very little palate. Nice hop profile and use of roasted malts - but compared to other true imperial stouts, this beer is lacking. On it’s own however, it’s very good for NC standards. beerandrugby (210), Nashville, Tennessee, USA

This beer would have been a great dry stout...but to be classified as Imperial...just not enough oomph...enjoyable a good stout for sure, very roasted sweet but also dry...good SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA

Pours black although the light was too dim to deteremine opacity. Average sized creamy head, that suited a Stout.
Aroma when cold was of dark roast malts and some chocolate. Intensified as it warmed.
The flavor was full and roasty with minimal amounts of sweetness and a long dry finish. As I drank this I thought it must be a Dry Stout. I don’t know if I would consider it an Imperial. If the alcohol was there it was completely hidden. Very drinkable and solidly brewed. 00cobraR (1098), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/20 | May 17, 2004 This was a stout that was just lacking all the way around. Overly carbonated and not good quality, it tasted more like a porter. Below average. Jet black body with a head that vanishes in moments, burnt coffee notes. I expected better and recieved less. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 28, 2004 really hoppy for a stout. coffee aftertaste that lingers a while. a pretty good imperial stout brewed in NC, the only one i know of actually. you can tell the alcohol is a little lacking since it is probably under 6%. poured from another 5L keg. thick creamy head. good beer dberger624 (1028), Phila, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 12, 2004 Draft sampler at the brewery. This was little watery for me for an imperial stout. If it was a dry stout it would have been better. I was looking for a little more roasty flavor. haddon90 (1036), Alexandria, Virginia, USA

Nice, solid aroma. Roasted malts, and a hint of hickory. Good taste. Kind of a dry hickory taste, hence the name. Pretty solid stout overall. A nice try!
