Tap at Mellow Mushroom, Charlottesville, VA. Browinish amber, looks slightly clody, small head. Malty nose, with a typical amber smell with the addition of some hoppiness. A good amount of hops in the flavor to turn an ordinary amber into a very tasty brew. Not overpowering flavor can make this a nice session beer.

Bomber. I’ll start by saying I’m not a red guy. I always seem to detect some metallic notes I just don’t like. That said, this ain’t bad. Coppery pour topped by a big tan head - very nice looking beer! Light, sweet malt nose, caramel, some light nuttiness and very weak coffee. Decent medium body. Some more bitter nut flavors well up in the finish, a touch of spicy hop. Not bad!

Bomber. Lightly hazy, deep red-copper with a lasting quarter inch of cream. Faint aroma of toasted nut, cocoa and caramel. Flavors are caramel, chocolate, berries and nut tempered by some slight citrus, wood and chalk. Medium body is mostly smooth, but has a few flareups.

(22oz bottle) Crystal clear copper body topped by medium beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, grapefruit. Taste is medium sweet, apricot, grapefruit/wood, light caramel -- sort of comes across as dry-hopped. Light-medium body.

Bottle. Dark copper pour. Small off-white head. Nose is sweet malts, caramel, and soft grains. Almost a hint of coffee as well. Taste is slightly spicy and floral hops, delicate citrus notes, caramel, and sweet, chewy malts. Hint of toffee at times as well. Body is creamy and chewy. Medium overall with sturdy carbonation. Finishes with a bit more bitterness, sweet malts, caramel, and spicy hops. Nice!

From the bomber, this poured with a reddish amber hue and a very macro-looking airy white head. The aroma is citric, but in an odd earthy way. The flavors are bit odd as well ... the first hit is a sweet citrusy thing, but then it’s followed with a bit of a bready malt, and then finishes with an almost coffee bitterness. It’s an odd mix, but somehow it comes across pretty well. (#2768, 4/1/2007)
