Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

A dark ruby, fizzy amber beer, with serious floaties (looks like there’s fish food in there) - aroma of plum, raisin, date, nutmeg, coriander, caramel, strong yeastiness, light wildflowers - fruity sweetness is nicely balanced by mild vinous character, some fruit skin tartness, and moderate warming spices - caramel, toffee, plum, yeast, figs - enormous fruit complexity - finishes with some orange and bright spices (coriander, ginger, and citrus peel) - really nicely done.

Bottle from Port Carlsbad bottle shop: Murky deep reddish amber with a generous thick tan head. Aroma is fruity caramel. Flavor starts rich with dark fruit (plum, black cherries) followed by yeast, caramel and spice. Finish is lightly dry with hints of citrus. Medium body is silky with moderate carbonation. 8.5 ABV warms the face.

I remember when at the Olfabrikken open house, after around 14 of Christian’s regular beers, a few of us were still at his farm...uh...brewery, and he pulled out an Abbey style beer and I said, damn, this is the best of the lot!!! Copper...big head. Strong sweet malt aroma and flavor, with hints of plums, prunes, carob, bitter chocolate, molassas, some funky bitterness. Tasty and big overall.

Poured a murky burgundy color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of dried fruits, light spices (clove, ginger), some caramel, nuts and light alcohol. Taste was sweeter, caramel, citrus fruits, coriander, earthy yeast, a bit of alcohol, and an overall thin mouthfeel.
