Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

(bottle at Cellars) This was a really nice dubbel. Poured a dark brown with a light tan head. Nice aroma that smells like grape juice infused with numerous mulling spices, along with a bready smell. This tasted like a dry white wine with a little dark fruit thrown into the mix, followed up by a large yeasty finish. Thick mouthfeel. One of the best dubbels I’ve tried.

I thought this was fabulous--I need to get more. Notes of spice open up like Christmas presents in the laps of children, followed by a resonant hop note that builds and lends an air of surprise. A bitter end sticks around, all complicating the essential malty resonance of a wonderful dubbel--plenty of dark fruit, yeast, malty goodness. // Re-rate at RBSG 2009: dropped a couple points off of it (from 8-4-9-4-18).

Orange to copper in color with a huge, bubbly canvas colored head. Citrus and orange peel aromas along with wisps of floral hops, caramel, toffee, ripe fruit and a touch of alcohol, attic dust and yeast as it sets. To me this has a classic abbey aroma. Sweet malt start, with caramel, and ripe light fruit. Fairly sharp middle with spice and alcohol. A light liqueur more than vinous in many ways. Lightly herbal and spicy. A strong dubbel as my tongue and stomach is now aflame. This is an imperial brew; full rich and complex. Give this some roasted malt and this would be a top 50 brew as all the stouties would think this is amazing.

Thanks Skyview. The beer pours to a brown woody mahogany body with some small particulate. A lasting white head sits on top. The aroma is mineral laden caramelized malt. Rich tobacco, maduro cigars, dark candi sugars. Fruity. The flavor is caramel, sugars, fruity malts, and yeasts. The palate is medium bodied, carbonated, and balanced. I liked it.

Thanks for sharing this one Ryan! Big white head settles down to a light coppery body. Herbal to peppery hops. Lighter malt for the style, small fruity acitiy. Full smooth creamy body. A bit of a let down in the flavor, but not much. appley fruit. A bit oaky and tannic... perhaps thats some toasty malt? Frtuiy acidity over a rather dry finish. Not bad

Pours a hazy orangey brown color with a medium, bubbly, tan head. Aroma of caramel, spices and grape juice. Good aroma of grape juice, spices and caramel. The alcohol is present in the flavor but not to a point of being disturbing. The body is light to medium with a powdery texture and lively carbonation.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, toasted nuts), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of orange peel, toffee, banana, alcohol, hint of fish. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Pleasant beer somewhat reminiscent of Abbaye des Rocs (and yeah, Anker with that big banana smell) stuff. Occasionally a weird seafoody odor pops out from the background, but it’s rare and faint.

Bottle, 75cl. The beer is dark reddish brown with a ligtbrown/off-white head. The aroma is malty and caramel with notes of bitterness. The flavor is caramel malts with fruits and sweetness. The mouthfeel is a medium body. Overall this beer is medium.
