Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

Picked up a single 750 ml bottle and shared during Cheesehead YeHA in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear caramel amber brew with a creamy off-white head that has some good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, some flowery hops, toffee, yeast, and a touch of tart berries. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of bready caramel malt, some earth herbs, yeast and a touch of spearmint. Finish is smooth, creamy with a white pepper spice caramel aftertaste. Almost considered as a Holiday spiced ale.

Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a very creamy white head. Simple aroma of sweet malt, dry yeast and tart cherries. Flavor, too, is quite simple (but inoffensive). Plenty of dry, doughy yeast. Some sweet dark fruity malt. White pepper spice. Sharp carbonation. Almost acidic. Very lively on the tongue.

Brewed at Het Anker, so of course it is going to be delicious. This is the best abbey style beer I had in some time. Lots of carbonation on this dark brown beer, very tall cream colored head. Thick and heavy palate, full of sweet malt, fruit, and Belgian yeast. I didn’t taste the herbs, but found this to be a more traditional, sweet, fruity malty beer. Nice smooth palate

Courtesy of Brewfiend. Dark copper with a large head. Lots of floating yeast in this bad boy. Strong herbal aroma. A bit of spearmint. Lots of bready and yeasty goodness in the flavor. Still herbal. A little chocolate towards the end. An excellent dubbel.

Sweet and sharp at the same time - it’s totally toffee candy and them bam! hit with a yeasty licorice thing at the back of the throat. Smells like the holidays, all nutmeg and cinnamon and good cheer. Fresh and inviting aroma. Nice medium weight palate in your mouth; nice looks, all medium glowing brown and slightly muddied.

Cheesehead YeHA brought by Chuck I think: Coppery hue with fine bubbles and some lace, also some floaties found in the glass. The aroma has notes of caramel, toffee, pear, anise, grassy and herbal hops. The taste has a shocking aggressive hop character and acidity as well. The base is malty bread and light clove and anise spice with even a hint of candy. The mouth feel is biting and sharp with a warming and chalky finish. An okay beer but a tad unbalanced for my tastes.

Thanks to whoever brought this! Poured deeper reddish-amber with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up darker fruit and toffee accented by a nice blend of softer spices and some caramel.. enjoyed it! The flavor had warm darker fruits at the core with lots of peppery spices surrounding.. warm and sweet on the back-end. Warm and very spicy on the palate with peppery notes sticking on the medium-length finish.. OK balance. Solid brew.
