Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

(Bottled, 0.75l) Muddy brown with a Very small head. Strongly mandarine-fruity aroma with some anise feel. The flavor is pretty much the same: mandarine, anise, some licorice. Medium-bodied, slightly foamy palate. A quite Corsendonk Xmas / GC Xmas -like brew.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a fast disapperaing brown head with sediment floating around. The aroma is sweet mlaty with strong notes of caramel, medium notes of yeast, and lesser notes of alcohol. The flavor is sweet mlaty with strong notes of alcohol, combined with notes of caramel, spices, brown sugar, and yeast.

(750ml Bottle) Pours a cloudy deep ruby body with a tall beige head. Aroma of dark fruit (raisins, plums, dates), mustiness, bread, and light roastiness. Flavor of caramel, raisins, chocolate, dates, and coriander with a carbonated mouthfeel.

Bottle… Hazy, dark ruby ale with burnt orange highlights and a creamy, off-white head. Good retention. Breadsy, dark fruit nose with a warm alcohol burn. Notes of fruitcake, dates, dark bread and dark raisins with a hint of dried plum. Yeasty, fruity flavor is balanced nicely by medium malt sweetness and medium stale hop and alcohol bitterness. Dark breads, dark candy sugar and dark, sweet fruits. Full-bodied and silky with barbed carbonation. Oddly, a crisp, mostly clean finish. Kudos to boboski for this beer!

This beer is brewed at the same amazing establishment that regularly turns out stunning batches of Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer, so I’m excited long before the bottle ever arrives on my doorstep. 2006 vintage. Pours a deep mahogany/teak combination, a thin and creamy beige head slowly recedes to a ring at the perimeter. the body is very pretty, oily in appearance, with ruby hues deep within. The nose represents exactly what I desire in the whole of the aroma of an aged abbey dubbel(this bottle is approximately 2-3 years old). High alcohol, yes - but beyond that lies magnificent sherry, nutty caramel malts, vinous and succulent dark fruits(plum, raisin, etc.). Sugar-glazed and mineralic bready malts and layer upon layer of caramel, slightly toasted and prophetic in its expulsion of unique aromatic compounds, all freely handed over while still retaining a noble and traditional influential nod. The flavor is very malty and moderately to highly sweet with a nice backing dryness and light acidity. Bitterness is low. Yeast is more apparent in the flavor(barely noticeable in the nose). Maltiness is entertaining. Alcohol is warming in a modest finish that leaves caramel and phenols lingering. The mouthfeel is medium to medium-full bodied, softly though generously carbonated and silky for the most part. This beer treated me right.

Bottle at LCRBM3. Has some Belgian yeast on aroma. Decent fruit. a beer for a winter’s day in front of a fire. Brown sugar, but so much character with a bit of peppery hop. I love it.

3rd LCRBM. Aroma has caramel malts, black currant, some spice. Hazy, brown coloured with an off-white head. Taste is sweet with much fruitiness (grapes), caramel malts. Nice bitterness. Good brew.

3rd LCRBM. Malty, buttery aroma, slightly spiced. Sweet flavor with flowery hops, roasted malt and licorice. Hints of citrus and red berries. Malty. Well done, but not my favorite from this brewery.
