Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

750 ml. bottle from Liquid Solutions. Teddish tinged amber color with a tan head. Rich medium dark fruit (date?) aromas over roasted malt. Medium plus body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is a mix of dates, raisins and lighter stone fruits. Drys out in the finish, showing a somewhat bitter aspect. Really mellow. Really real.

This beer starts off with a dark bread aroma with a hint of molasses aroma coupled with clove and a touch of cinnamon. Its heavily yeasty and smells strongly of alchol. It has a small, fizzy head that is light brown and that is mostly diminishing. The body is hazy and murky with medium to large body particles. The body hue is brown. The initial flavor of the beer is moderately to heavily sweet and the finish taste is very much an alcohol flavor. The finish duration is average. The body is medium to full according to the palate and has a very syrupy texture. The carbonation if soft-lively and the finish feel is alchoholic - tastes a bit like whiskey. The sweet beginning did not go well with me which is why i rated this beer lower than average!

750, corked and baled. These guys clearly had no trouble stepping up and interpreting a distinctly belgian style in a fresh way that’s right on point for what you might expect from the style. Style conformity isn’t always a blessing, but this is so squarely on target that it’s worth mentioning.
Dark brown with caramel highlights and acres of floating sediments. Rich green apple and caramel cream nose. Creamy, somewhat thick body. Caramel, cream, and light fruit on the mid-palate. Mild finish. Lovely stuff.

750 ml bottle shared by Gregis. I believe he said he picked this up at Beertopia in Omaha (shameless plug for one of my favorite beer stores). Pour is clear brown ruby with a huge 4 inch off white head. Decent lace left behind. Aroma of chemical menthol, some maltiness behind that. Alcohol heat is evident. Dried fruit is the primary flavor initially - prunes, raisins, with some of the chemical graininess coming through. Aftertaste has residual alcohol. Overall this was just fine, just nothing really special. Thanks for sharing this one Greg. Gregis very generous.

Pours bright reddish brown with scant khaki head. Fruity banana, allspice, a bit of raisin, and some cherry. Restrained flavors. Raisin, a bit of chocolate, toffee, and alcohol. Medium body with high carbonation. A dry finish with some heat. Not a bad beer.

750ml bottle shared by Gregis. Aroma is malt, dark fruit, roasted nuts, vanilla, alcohol, wintergreen. Amber/copper colored with lots of floaties and a smallish head. Taste is fading dark fruit, mild roast, toast, caramel, alcohol. A little disappointing.

750mL bottle Mindst holdbar til januar 2012. Clear copper orange with a two finger creamy light beige head--great retention. Very fruity--figs, raisins and prunes up front with plenty of yeasty notes. Brown sugar and graham cracker is also present. A bit of apricot and alcohol show up in the flavor. Fairly sweet, but the alcohol does dry out the beer a fair amount in the finish. Moderate carbonation with a full body. Not my favorite dubbel, but still pretty good.

Bottle shared with blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc, mabel & tupalev - courtesy of blankboy. Orange-ruby with a small head and lots of little floaties. Aroma is rich and malty, with a lot of dark fruit, a bit of spice, and a faint tartness. Medium bodied. Flavour is quite nice and fairly complex - quite sweet to start, with some quickly developing spice notes, and a building bitterness in the finish. Mmm, yeah, very good.
