| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 29, 2007 Cloudy dark-copper body with some chunks of yeast topped by a beige ring of foam. Lots of citrusy hops on the nose. In mouth you’ve got crunchy caramelized malts, lots of residual sugars and a whole lot of c-hops. Alcohol warming sensation despite being “only” 8%. Warm bitter finish. Somewhere between an American IIPA and an American Barley Wine. Last beer in a taste-test that included a lots of Ølfabrikken beers. Man does this brewery kicks ass of what! I’m really looking forward to our next private importation of this stuff. But that will only happen in a year, maybe more. I can’t wait that long. God, please help me be a more patient man, and help me right f**king now. tronraner (1933), Seymour, Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 26, 2007 Bottle split between myself, SpringsLicker, and decaturstevo. Pours bright amber with slight beige head. The aroma is very sweet with honey and some caramel, some alcohol. The flavor is sharp but very caramelly. A little bit of tropical fruit sneaks in there, too. Finish is mild fruity hops and something like a loaf of whole grain bread (at least I think that’s what my notes say, they are growing illegible). | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 25, 2007 My Bottom Line:
This round and welcoming Barley Wine proffers plenty of caramel maltiness to balance out the resinous and citrusy hoppiness, all the while remaining approachable and never over-the-top.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the murky brownish-red.
-The sweet maltiness and lightly fruity yeast are well chosen.
-The finishing hop bitterness is powerful and enjoyable.
-This is not your typically exuberant American-style Barley Wine, but it still packs a lot of flavor intrinsic to the style.
