Commercial Description:
An Ølfabrikken guest brew. We have invited one of our colleagues to come by and do any brew he or she would like.
ØLFABRIKKEN MIKES BARLEYWINE has been created by American brewer and beer connoisseur Mike Murphy, who wanted to brew one of the (in)famous styles from his homeland. This has resulted in a strong and assertively bitter ale (90+ IBU's) dominated by Cascade, Chinook and Centennial hops, but still with enough sweetness to counter the hops. A bit of roasted barley provides depth and complexity to this truly unique brew. Mikes Barleywine is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers.

Bottle acquired in joint trade. Bottled on Nov 05. Poured a deep reddish / brown color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of toffee, nutty, dark fruits, light chocolate and caramel. Tastes of toffee, dark fruits, caramel, and citrus. Had a stronger hoppiness to it. Light alcohol in the finish. Some lacing left on the glass. Creamy body.

Thanks to egajdzis/hopdog(they received in a joint trade from the Danes) to the tasting... Appears a hazy, red toned amber with a small, creamy, light tan head. Smell is hoppy, with cocoa notes, fruity, hoppy citrus, and caramel. Taste is of the same aromas with some toasted nuts jumping out. Mouthfeel is boozy, sugary, and hoppy...this is a year old but I think it needs more age. As a side note, this one had contributions from Mike Murphy(romabrew)...I thought about how I would rate this from recent comments that were spawned on the probrewer site, as well as RB, & BA by him but I’m taking the high road here and leaving it strictly to the beer to speak for itself. Overall, not bad.

[Bottled 11/05] Poured a brownish red color, with a large, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus fruits, caramel malts, vanilla, tobacco, tropical fruits, figs, and raisins. Taste of more citrus fruits, caramel malts, some vanilla, with dried fruits, and faint rummy alcohol in the finish.

Bottle shared by DickinsonBeer on 4/22/06: Pours a clear dark copper amber with a big, frothy, nicely-lacing off-white head. Sweet, lightly-toasted dark caramel malty aroma has a nice, fresh American hoppy presence. Starts with good pale malty sweetness with lots of citrusy flavor hops. Well-balanced, but not as big as I’m used to in barleywines.

Pours a murky deep amber brown with a thin lasting beige head. Aroma is phenolic with light rubber notes, some funky farmhouse notes as well- then some sweet malt, and a light citrus hoppiness. Sweet malty flavor- a bit dry and overcarbed, and a moderate hoppy bitterness. Nothing really stands out in this beer to make it great, but it was decent.

Big thanks to Dickinsonbeer for this rare treat. Poured a slightly hazed deep amber color with a small off-white head. Fruity sweet aroma with plenty of malt. The aroma had a mild sweaty note to it. Very malty flavor was sweet and warming. Citrus hop seemed a little light but I also had an Avery Maharaja before it.
