Commercial Description:
An Ølfabrikken guest brew. We have invited one of our colleagues to come by and do any brew he or she would like.
ØLFABRIKKEN MIKES BARLEYWINE has been created by American brewer and beer connoisseur Mike Murphy, who wanted to brew one of the (in)famous styles from his homeland. This has resulted in a strong and assertively bitter ale (90+ IBU's) dominated by Cascade, Chinook and Centennial hops, but still with enough sweetness to counter the hops. A bit of roasted barley provides depth and complexity to this truly unique brew. Mikes Barleywine is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers.

An unclear amber beer with a thich orange head. The aroma is sweet and very hoppy with some notes of the alfa acids. The flavor is sweet and very hoppy which gives it notes of straw. I don’t find much malt in this one, but the alcohol shows by giving you a warming feeling. If I had to guess the style I’d categorize it as an Imperial IPA.

(Bottle 50 cl) Hazy, dark mahogany with a tiny, creamy head. Fat, hoppy nose. Caramelish sweetness atop a rather solid body. Hoppy - but not overly so - bitter finish. Lovely. 111105

Bottled. Hazy nut brown, firm, lively head. Rich orangey aroma. Sweet and lightly soapy with notes of syrup and orange liqueur. Warming bitter finish. The swetness takes over and distracts from the good flavours.

Dark color; gian thick head. The aroma is malty and fruity (sweet oranges, light apricots, some old hops; excellent. Good mouthfeel, malt, loads of caramel, quite sweet, with a strong resiny bitterness, making of it an Ale closer to an American than a classic Barley Wine. The final has too much caramel and shorter bitterness than expected. Overall, perfumy but with too much caramel.
Thanks Jørgen for trading this bottle, which was in excellent conditions despite the BBE.
