The aroma is barrel aged like sweet vanilla porter. Chocolate, coffee, vanilla barrel. The flavor is rich with chocolate and interesting barley. Definitely acidic palate. Rich and creamy palate. I’ve had better brews. But, nonetheless, this one’s tasty. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Medium to full bodied with and silky smooth mouthfeel. Some warmth in the chest. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

Pours dark gloppy black and at first you think there will be no real head, but at the last second it comes bubbling up and a compressed dark mocha colored head about a pencil thick forms up and fades slowly.

The aroma is rich concentrated dark chocolate and roasty/burnt malt. Some overcooked chocolate cake/brownie notes give it a burnt bready aroma.

Very burnt fore is super bitter with massive dark chocolate and burnt bitterness. A comparitively milder sweetness that is cream accented appears in the middle and it flirts with milk chocolate. Gets a little smokey in the finish, but barely. There are molasses notes in the finish, but it is mild. The acidic burnt bitterness is far and away the dominate flavor element. It’s almost Imperial Stout like in its intensity. Coffee comes out as it warms along with burnt/reduced dark fruits. Very interesting beer. TAR (2097), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 13, 2006 Midnight black. Tiny burnt-orange bubbles struggle to the surface to form a creamy halo. Powerful nose of molasses, port-steeped raisins, vanilla beans, and burnt caramel. Light waft of nutty roast and charcoal. Soft, tiny bubbles enhance the dense weightiness of the body. Inundation of molasses and a tacky plum fruitiness curbs the initial medicinal tendencies. Roastiness starkly emerges from the viscous depths of molasses and fruity esters to briefly negate the sweetness. Crunchy char elements lurk beneath and generate notes of campfire smoke and deep-rooted burnt cookie flavors. Fresh notes of tobacco vividly exude from the center and lend lots of softness which lengthens the rounded fruitiness. Brash and sappy hop character complements the bitter char. Medicinal port wine-like sweetness reemerges and slightly muddles the flavor. Finishes with crunchy, albeit lapsing, notes of bitter char, vanilla, and a lingering espresso nuttiness. All in all, the malts need a bit more structure in order to withstand the fruity acidity and medicinal qualities. Nose is fairly complex, but the fruitiness overshadows a large amount of the malt nuances. Not too shabby, but a bit more refinement would is what this needs. Thanks, ChristianSA.
