Commercial Description:
A dark and refreshing ale belonging to the family of "farmhouse ales" which used to refresh and strengthen the farm-workers all over Europe after a hard day in the fields. This is a darker winter-type which has the alcohol strength to make it suitable for celebration as well. Dark almost black in color, but not burned or roasted. With lively carbonation and a creamy café au lait colored head, this beer presents itself well in the glass. The hops provides the beer with refreshing dryness and bitterness. Whole hop flowers added during maturation maintains the freshness. A little bit of roasted malt gives notes of coffee and cocoa without leaving a burned flavor. Mixed fermentation with a Belgian and a neutral American yeast provides a complex profile with nuances of cherries and and honey without excessive fruitiness which could interfere with the hoppiness. Ølfabrikken Gårdbryg is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a lazing medium brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of berries, caramel, spices, and hops. The flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel and berries, and then comes the hops giving it notes of grass as well as some spicy notes, and in the third wave the alcohol makes it presence known on the tongue and with a slight burn in the throat, leading to a slightly bitter and slightly roasted finish.

(Bottle 50 cl) Hazy, dark brown with a nicely creamy and cappuchinoish, beige head leaving a pretty lacework. Aroma of caramel, fruit and aroma hops. Medium-bodied with sweet caramel notes and some herbal, cough syrup like notes with a metallic edge. The finish is dry with some nice aroma hops in the after burp. An odd brew. 310107

50 cL bottle (batch 239). Pours dark brown with a huge creamy and crispy brown head. Aroma is slight fruity and with a minor citric note, slight chocolate and caramel as well. Citric and heavy bitter hops and mildly caramel malty flavoured. Clear fruity note in a mild malty chocolate and caramel sweetness. Coffee and heavy on the hops bitterness into the finish which has a warming alcohol. A lot going in this one, surely well brewed, but not with a clear goal it seems. I do prefer the more heavy chocolate/coffee brews with a mild floral hoppyness over this one.

Bottle, 7%. Batch #234. Quite malty, sweet aroma with a hoppy note, grassy, peppery and sweet. Cloudy brown colour. OK brown head. Quite roasted and flavourful, mostly liquorice. Swelling mouthfeel. After a while the flavour gets more vinous with a tiny hint of horse. The flavour does not seem to have as much hop as the aroma.

Dark brown with a red hue and a nice. golden and creamy head. The aroma is sweetish, malty and has a hint of raisin. The flavour has initial sweetness, roasted malt, candy Sugar and raisin. The flavour doesn’t last as long as I would have liked, and the bitterness in the finish is a bit monotonous. I like it, but it’s not quite the standard I’m used to from Ølfabrikken. 1896
