Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

Pours a luscious black from the bomber with a soapy brown head. Smells of dark cocoa, barley, and sweet malts with additional licorice and coffee in the flavor. Slightly salty, but creamy in body and well balanced. Well worth the wait.

Draught at EBF. Black, tiny beige head. Dry, coffeeish malty aroma. Smooth salty flavor with dry coffee and strong liquorice. Slightly sourish finish, some bitter cocoa. Medium bodied, smooth round carbonation. Nicely salty, honest porter.

Opaque black pour with a tan head. Chocolate milk aroma with raisins and berries. Very sweet flavor with berries and a little bit of lactic sourness. Creamy chocolate throughout. Bitter coffee finish with lots of roast and a bit of alcohol. Overall, a very good porter. Alcohol is hidden well.

Bottle. I have had several bottles of this and lately a few on can and it’s sadly nowhere near the same high quality brew. On bottle this is one of my favourite porters though, the real danish sort guld. Has plenty of chocolate and neat lactal notes. Perfectly balanced bitter aftertaste. Light bodied and smooth, easy to drink but not at all tasteless.

Draft @ EPBF Nice black color with some fizzy beige head. Looks pretty thin. Aroma is lots of roasted malt and licorice. Mouthfeel is a bit thin as expected but still good. Taste is really rich with lots of roasted notes and licorice, but also some coffee and fruit.

Can.50cl. The color looked like dark espresso. The head was thin and dark tan. Wonderfully rich nose, molasses, chocolate, coffee.

Bottle. I found this to be a solid porter, but not an overwhelmingly good one by a long stretch. The pour and head color are certainly right, and the standard notes of chocolate, burnt sugar, a touch of coffee, and vanilla are on the palate. But what’s not there is the complexity that one normally associates with a beer ranked this highly on this site. And moreover, the finish isn’t nearly as long-lasting as a number of other beers in this overall percentage range. So while I found this to be a good beer, one that was well crafted and well extracted, I also found it to be underwhelming. And although this doesn’t factor into the rating, the ratio of price of the bottle to the quality greatly favors the former.

This porter poured an oil black, short tan head - great lacing. Aroma was caramel chocolate, coffee and licorice, and maybe some rich dark fruit too - wow! Taste followed the same interesting path, thick bodied, long lingering flavor. Spectacular.
