Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

A grade Danish porter with a black body and a tight creamy head. The aroma is light, with notes of roasted grains. The flavor is light malty with a long bitter finish.

Batch 1141, brewed July 20, 2006

Pours a impenetrable dark brown with a fantastic thick solid-looking head with great retention - so thick it keeps its shape. Aroma is overwhelmingly present; marmite, fig, cocoa, molasses, the sweet essence of freshly-pulled espresso, rather than the bitterness thereof. What a first impression! Now in for the kill: I am surprised by the mouthfeel right off the bat, before my tastebuds have a chance to clock in: thin, reasonable carbonation but on the soft side. Then alcohol warms the finish and I start to detect what I’m actually tasting: milky, surprisingly nutty (probably the British brown malt) and delightfully chocolaty in the finish, not just cocoa but milk chocolate. Notes of fig remind me of a Baltic porter. Light buttered-toast notes in the finish, slight hop character but just enough to balance things out perfectly. While I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t a big, thick, chewy sandwich of a porter, I do like the complexity of this beer a LOT. Many thanks to Boutip for the trade. My 500th rating!

Really exceptional. I do think this is the only beer that tastes as if it has more alcohol than it actually does in a good way. I would have guessed this one at around 11 or 12%, but after two glasses of this i really wanted to more. There are tons of vinous cherries, plums, blueberries and other dark fruits, figs, as well dark chocolate, not so much chocolate as much as cocoa. This was one complex beer.

Thanks to Gunhaver for recommending and treating us to this one. Bottle at OTH. Incredible porter. Rich black with flavors reminiscent of banana and chocolate malt.

bottle. pours a dark, dark, nearly opaque mahogany with a thick, dense, tan head that takes a while to bubble away. rich, decadent smell of roasted malt, molasses, chocolate, black cherries and cocoa. there’s a hint of a spicy hop laying the background as well. taste is a all of that and a bit more, with bitter cocoa, lightly roasted coffee-ness, a bit less molasses, and with some more spicy notes and touches of smoke and wood. moderate bitterness and sweetness on the end, but both stick around forever, and go great with the amazing silky-smooth mouthfeel. quite thick for a porter, reaching almost imperial-stout-like viscosity, with a ton of carbonation. yeah, it’s really thick. i feel like repeating that. and that mouthfeel is so perfect. smooth as glass but slick as teflon, even a bit creamy, and it just helps move the wonderful roasty flavors all over your mouth and causes everything to linger well after the beer is gone. on first sip, i was somewhat underwhelmed, but the more i drink, the more i like this beer.

From my backlog. Poured a completely opaque color that I was shocked to see resembling used motor oil. This is a porter!??! Alcohol is only at 7.5%, but the viscosity is something like Expedition. Deep and intense aroma’s of bittersweet chocolate, fresh bread and roasted barley. A bit like chocolate chip cookies from the oven. A little vanilla tossed in as well for good measure. Flavour much like the aroma, but, “wow” the viscosity! Really? This is a normal porter? Wonderfully rich and decadent mouthfeel with a nice slickness around my palate. Finish leaves its mark with notes of espresso, a 12 year old Barbados Rum, and plums. Specialty grains jump on for the ride and give way to a pleasant bitterness. What an experience!

Bottle version. Pours black with a creamy. lasting brown head. Aroma and taste: lots of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and hops. Palate is thick and filling. Long end.
