Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

(Bottle, 0.75 l, at Pikkulintu on 2008-02-19) Black. Brown head. Liquorice, sweetness and roasted malts in nose. Dry palate. Roasted malts, salty liquorice, coffee and a hint of fruitiness in taste. Very full bodied. Some dark chocolate taste, too. Great one.

Canned: Black, brown head. Aroma and flavour dominated by roasted malts. Very faint notes of smoke and licorice. Underlying malty sweetness. Alcohol. Sugar sticky palate. Not too impressive given Ølfabrikkens overall standard. Maybe the canned version is too different to the bottled/draught versions.

Shared with Pyrozoid. Pitch black porr with a brown thin foamy head. Aromas of milk chocolate, molasses, soya sauce, whole wheat bread, creamy caramel, brown sugar... WOW... Amazing mouthfeel... flavor explosion... Perfect long lasting bitterness. Medium / full body with just the right carbonation. Added flavors of vanilla and all of the aromas. Great porter!

It pours black as sin with great aroma. It comes off the tounge with a a very nice roasted barley taste with a carmel the hits the back of the tounge. Very light hints of chocolate and vanilla also. Too bad that I cannot find this in Michigan and had to drive aprox. 100 miles into South Bend IN to buy it.

IT HAD VERY LITTLE CARBONATION. IT WENT DOWN VERY SMOOTH. IT TASTE A BIT SMOKEY WITH HINTS OF CARAMEL. A MUST BUY.

Bomber. Pours black with a nice tan head that recedes quickly. Aroma is very roasty, with a lot of dark fruit and a touch of caramel. Flavor is a lot of coffee, but not as bitter as many other dark beers. Much mellower, and it lingers very nicely. Finish is a little bit more bitter, but the whole way through there’s not even the hint of alcohol, other than a rather pleasant warmth. This one lacks a little bit of the depth that you often find in big imperial stouts though. As it warms up towards cellar temperature, where they suggest you serve it, it becomes much more acidic and harsh.

Bottle. – 7/4/6/4/12. Pours pitch black with a big, but diminishing, brown head. Some lacing. Roasted aroma. Remote notes of vanilla and chocolate. Flavour is sweet and roasted. A bit cloying. Finish is bitter with roasted notes. Slightly oily palate. A well made porter, but not too exciting. 01-05-08.

Can. – 6/4/5/4/10. Pours pitch black with a big, creamy brown head. Nice lacing. Roasted aroma with smoked and slight notes of coffee at first. As it warms it develops a sour touch; a bit like a urinal, but not in an all together bad way. Flavour is roasted and sour. Cloying. Finish is slightly bitter and sour with roasted notes in the background. The bitterness lingers. Not that great – only individual aspects make up for an otherwise mediocre beer. 01-05-08.

Rated the bottle and can versions against each other. They were quite different; can had better head/lasted longer. Very different aromas, flavours and mouth feel as well. But neither are worth the hype imo.

#800! Huge thanks to maniac for sharing this with me for my latest rating milestone. Initial aroma reaction... "Oh shit!". Great caramel malts with nice dark fruits. Perfect black body with a nice brown head. Amazing taste, great smoke quality with a awesome chocolate backbone, accented with some nice green grass. Ending is amazingly smooth with some nice smokiness.
