Aroma is very roasty, with a lot of dark fruit and a touch of caramel. Flavor is a lot of coffee, but not as bitter as many other dark beers. Much mellower, and it lingers very nicely. Finish is a little bit more bitter, but the whole way through there’s not even the hint of alcohol, other than a rather pleasant warmth. This one lacks a little bit of the depth that you often find in big imperial stouts though. As it warms up towards cellar temperature, where they suggest you serve it, it becomes much more acidic and harsh. NosirIwont (1186), Aalborg Vestby, Denmark
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Apr 30, 2008 Bottle. – 7/4/6/4/12. Pours pitch black with a big, but diminishing, brown head. Some lacing. Roasted aroma. Remote notes of vanilla and chocolate. Flavour is sweet and roasted. A bit cloying. Finish is bitter with roasted notes. Slightly oily palate. A well made porter, but not too exciting. 01-05-08.
Can. – 6/4/5/4/10. Pours pitch black with a big, creamy brown head. Nice lacing. Roasted aroma with smoked and slight notes of coffee at first. As it warms it develops a sour touch; a bit like a urinal, but not in an all together bad way. Flavour is roasted and sour. Cloying. Finish is slightly bitter and sour with roasted notes in the background. The bitterness lingers. Not that great – only individual aspects make up for an otherwise mediocre beer. 01-05-08.
Rated the bottle and can versions against each other. They were quite different; can had better head/lasted longer. Very different aromas, flavours and mouth feel as well. But neither are worth the hype imo. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 30, 2008 #800! Huge thanks to maniac for sharing this with me for my latest rating milestone. Initial aroma reaction... "Oh shit!". Great caramel malts with nice dark fruits. Perfect black body with a nice brown head. Amazing taste, great smoke quality with a awesome chocolate backbone, accented with some nice green grass. Ending is amazingly smooth with some nice smokiness. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 30, 2008 Dark black body with a medium creamy dark brown head. Huge chocolate and roasted malt aroma with some caramel and molassas. Flavor of lots of roasted malt, light chocolate, rum soaked fruit, caramel, smoke, and light molassas. Medium body with moderately high carbonation and a rather smooth roasted finish. Nephilium (557), Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 29, 2008 Strong aroma with chocolate and roasted notes. Pours black with a frothy tan head. Flavor is of bittersweet chocolate, with hints of roast and a touch of brown sugar. Creamy mouthfeel, with a decent bitter finish. Not bad for a style that isn’t my favorite. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 28, 2008 Pours pitch black with a one finger dark tan head which dissipates quickly leaving very little lacing. Only the faintest remnant of bubbles left around the edges after the initial pour. The smell is dominated by roasted malts and chocolate but I also got a definite hint of coffee and vanilla as well. An exceptional blend of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts perfectly balanced with hints of molasses. Definitely on the sweet side of things as porters go, like a big malted milk ball. Yummy! Viscous and oily on the tongue with a slight bitterness in the aftertaste. This would certainly be at the top of my list of porters and verges on crossing the line into stout territory. Quite delicious and the gold standard for porters as far as I’m concerned. darkguardian (506), Florida, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 28, 2008 16oz courtesy of Knightly Spirits. Poured inky black with a milk chocolate head into a Guiness pint. The nose on this beer is awesome. Soy sauce, coffee, and a strong chocolate aroma dominate. Flavor is absolutely amazing. Roasty malt up front followed by caramel and chocolate covered sour cherries and an absolutely silky smooth finish of milk chocolate. Best porter I’ve ever had by far. Blom (514), Odense, Denmark
