Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

Bottle. Small fizzy, bubbly tan head that mostly diminished, fair amount of lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation, and a black hue. Nose was malt, roasty, chocolate, rich, sweet, some caramel, and some fruity notes.Ditto for the flavor, vinuous but not overly done and a dry finish. Fairly smooth mouthfeel and medium in body.Very quaffable and easy to drink, nicely balanced, would drink this again, and worthy of a try.

Can: Nice opague dark brown with a froathing brown head. Aroma is fruity, a little vinouse and has tons of roasted notes, roasted cofee, roasted nutes and chocolate. Very clean mouthfull, again a good amount of vinouse notes backed up by a smooth roasted bitterness and finish.

Ebony colored with a dark tan head that struggles to rise through the viscosity, peaking at a finger’s height. As it reduces to a ring, webbed lacing covers the glass. Aroma is deep, heavenly milk chocolate + caramel. There’s also a faint liqueur note under that chocolate. Flavor is less sweet than the aroma, with more emphasis on roastiness. The chocolate and caramel (and a lactose note with warmth) are still there, but they’re balanced by anise and roasted bitterness. Tastes like the porter version of The Abyss. Carbonation is appropriately modest, body is between medium and full. Big imperial beers can tend to be cloying after a while but this is just the opposite, as the flavors are robust but not overpowering towards each other.

Bottle has a July-20-2009 drink by date. Pitch black with a brown head. Big dark cocoa, roasted nut aroma with some wood. Thick chewy mouthfeel. Huge roasted/burnt malt flavors with tobacco, black licorice. A great brew, bigger and better than most imperial stouts. 11277

Can. Pitch black with huge coffe brown head. Aroma some hopps at the beginning and then coffee and roasted malts takes over. Taste intense coffe and roasted malts. Not the kind of beer I´m most fond of even though it hurts me to downrate the highest rated danish beer.

Tasted 2008-04-05. Canned. Pours pitch black with brown, creamy head. Aroma: coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla. Flavour: powerfully bitter and yet a bit sweet. Very full bodied, oily texture, very tasty!
