Maybe a little light-brown around the rim. Aroma is very roasty, burnt coffee with a sweetness also in there. Flavor and texture are very Impy Stout-like, with coffee and malt flavor and a medium-thick texture that is sticky, yet dry aftertaste. Can’t consider this one a porter as it doesn’t come across as a porter but as an Imperial Stout. PhillyBeer2112 (2089), Orange Park, Florida, USA

Poured a brown tinted black that was opaque in the glass with a large foaming head that was almost black itself! aroma was huge with chocolate drenched coffee beans and roasted barley. Flavor was semi-sweet with loads of bitter chocolate, some roast. Full palate but soft carbonation gave it a velvety mouthfeel. Semi-dry finish. Touches of molasses. Awesome. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

The aroma was aged, coffee, roasty, and sweet malt. The color and flavor resembled a stout. The flavor was coffee, roasty, musty, and sweet malt. The palate was thick bodied. The finish was long-lasting and roasty. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

Wonderfully rich nose, molasses, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, light alcohol. The flavor is reminiscent of an RIS. Fairly thick, sweet, roasted coffee, chocolate, mild alcohol, molasses, heavy on coffee. The palate is thick and rich. Roasted finish and lasting warmth with a mild waxy feel on the side of your tongue. Very nice brew. Palidor19 (1785), Brandon, Florida, USA

The appearance is dark brown with a thin head. The flavor is like the aroma and bitter. The palate is smooth. For what it is it’s true to type. I just don’t happen to like it very much. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 10, 2007 Truly superlative porter, definitely living up to the hype. A big gloopy pour, just the way I like it, with some decent carbonation and a nice cappucino-looking head. A huge, complex aroma filled with chocolate, breakfast blend coffee, and some slight vinous notes. The dark fruits come through as you begin to tuck into this one, never overpowering the roast and malts but simply giving them a bit more depth, giving this a distinct personality. Very good, wish it was readily available in NC. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 10, 2007 Bottle into shaker, purchased at Greens, Atlanta. Holy Hindu cow. This pours like a stout, with head as dark as Bourbon County but not as copious. Smell: powdered sugar sweetness over a syrupy, rich, decadent roast smothered in Dark Lord-esque chocolate. Smells thick. Taste: um, this is not a porter (unless "porter" in Scandanavian means "imperial stout," which it might). This is what Surly Darkness wishes it were: hoppy as all hell (I can’t even remember what came before this richly bitter, dry, chewy chocolate root earthiness that is paralyzing my mouth). Alcohol astringency very late in the finish. Wow! I’ve taken one sip, and my tongue is numb. It’s like they put novacaine in the secondary. Middle is not as integrated as it could be, just a presage of the hot hops fire that is the finish. Unsweetened chocolate peeks through every once in a while, but sparingly. With just a little more balance, this would contend for top-10 honors in my book. (I like the simple humility on the bottle, too, with a 3/5 for bitterness and a 4/5 for "robust.") Phenomenal experience.
