Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

A very nice porter although to be honest having it as a top 50 beer in the world is a bit of a stretch. Roastiness of the malts is very nice and is evident on the nose a in the taste. Nice sweetnss to it and perhaps a subtle fruitiness to it. Vanilla also noticeable in the taste. Good brew

500 mL bottle courtesy of jdubFL. Thanks Justin! 1800th rating. Hurrah. Pours nearly pitch black with a dark brown, medium head. Good head retention and decent lacing. Aroma is beautiful roasted malts with chocolate, coffee and a bit of smokiness. Vanilla, toffee and leather as well. Taste is roasted malts, coffee and smoke. Light bitterness in the finish. Full bodied and quite creamy. Damn good beer.

Aroma of booze and chocolate liquor escapes the still-warm bottle I uncap, and it pours a heavy plop of dark dark thick blackish goodness with a swirling sticky thick brown cap. We are in ’cocoa smoothee’ land here. Decadent aromas of Arabica espresso cofffee and cocoa are played out in taste, and palate is superbly thick. Tang of milky-chocolatey sourness and roasty barley makes this a porter more than a stout. Long delectable finish. As the bottle cools, dry coca gets up into the sinuses, and bitter roast note fits that supporting role perfectly. Wowzers. Oh and lots of gummy sediment, LOL!

22 oz bottle courtesy of Binnys (Orland Park, IL). I’ve heard this beer has changed, but I still grabbed it up back when it came out and cellared it accordingly. Pours pitch black, opaqe, with dark brown big bubbly head that laces, settles to a decent amount. Aromas are heavy on chocolatey sweetness, roasted malt and bitterness, coffee and mocha, a nice sweetness, caramel, very nice. Initial is decent bodied, good flavors that pack a chocolate and coffee punch, mocha and roasted malts, caramel, and sweetness linger for sure, coating the palate, decent bitterness on the backend balances, but the silky velvety flavors take hold. Roast and sweetness remains solid, dark fruits come in a bit, bitterness holds, and alcohol comes in a touch warm on the backend. Flavors linger on the palate pretty strongly. Quality porte. If there is a qualm, it is sweetness. Pretty good body though.
