KimJohansen (6645), Copenhagen V, Denmark Feb 24, 2008 Hazy dark amber with tiny head. Sweet fruity aroma with yeast, caramel and light roasted malt notes. Sweet yeasty flavor with roasted malt, caramel and overripe fruits. Ends rather sweet. HughConway (364), Alabama, USA Feb 22, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown pour, decent head. Little lasting carbonation. Still feels slightly rougher than the Belgians, even tasting blind. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Feb 22, 2008 Pours dark copper/red with a thick head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, and teast. Flavor of toffee and dark fruits. Moderately bitter finish. Very complex beer. smith4498 (816), Miami, Florida, USA Feb 19, 2008 Poured a deep reddish color with a light tan head. Aromas of sweet dark fruits, figs, licorice. Malt flavor with hints of raisins and cherries ond some metallic taste. Medium body with a creamy texture, lively carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. Not bad. TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 19, 2008 Updated: Feb 20, 2008Poured using a Trappist glass. A rich dark burgundy pour like port wine with a nice foamy head. Different mix of aromas that carries into the pallet. Fruits, smoky caramel toffee and chocolate notes. Rich and creamy, strong and complex. There is a bit of alcohol bite throughout. Nice dry aftertaste nothing really bitter or overly sweet. Really great strong ale from New York no less. ScottB (73), Bristow, Virginia, USA Feb 17, 2008 Bottle. This is awesome. Pours a rich burgundy-brown. Billowy head gives way to a delicate lace. Candi on the nose. I love the complexity. Caramel, spice and a nice carbonation. Gots to have more. FatguyRacer (128), Crownsville, Maryland, USA Feb 16, 2008 Bottle. Poured into a large snifter. Fruit arouma and a beautiful reddish brown body with a dark tan head. Very complex flavors. The carmel malts seem to dominate and like others have said its a bit to sweet. A little more hop would be good. Not quite in leaque with Rochfort , but not far off either. Gusgus (176), Mölndal, Sweden Feb 16, 2008 Bottle. Dark fruity smell of plum and raisins. Some roasted malt and caramel. Dark malt reminiscent of rye.
Big body. Sweet. A bit too sweet for my taste. Some bitter astringency, again reminding of rye. Slightly vinous and oaky. Nice. The alcohol comes through and finishes slightly bitter.
I like the sour and oaky notes, but it is slightly bitter from hops, grains and yeast, and a bit too sweet in the finish.
