Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Muddy brown color, small beige head. Chocolaty and a bit fruity, propably some notes of oxidation. First impression: anise ... then some licorice, caramel backed with malts. Short finish, alcohol is very well hidden. Very interesting, something similar to Gouden Carolus Christmas. Fabulously balanced.

Bottled (thanks Degarth). Brownish amber colour with mediumsized beige head. Aroma is alcohol, spices and herbs. Flavour is spices and licorice. Slight notes of some caramel and candyish sweetness. I think this could do with some "heavier meaty foods" better than it’s without.

[745-20071008] 750mL (w/ jerc, tuqueboy). Toasted chocolate aroma with some alcohol and anise. Hazy, dark brown red body with a long-lasting foamy light tan head. Toasted Belgian yeast flavour has some chocolate notes and licorice anise. Medium-full body. Very nice, goes well with yummy pork roast.

I can’t believe I have not rated this. Had a side by side of 2 year old versions of the NY and Belgian. The NY won by a wide margin. Whereas the fresh version is sweet caramel and finishes dry, the NY version after two years drops a lot of the sweetness and gains a slight soda-like characteristic, but still carries most of the flavors that are present in the fresh version. I still think the optimal aging for this beer would be around a year to 18 months, but at the same time, I think it’s still pretty solid. Lots of caramel, red apple, and fruitiness, but also the soda water taste and over-carbonation that is generally present in Ommegang beers- and a lot of belgians.

has a nice sweet almost sugary taste to it. A nice body, good balance, has a slight hop hint mixed in with the sweet taste.

Nice Aroma--smells sweet and fruity at the same time; dark reddish brown color; tastes wonderful with nice aftertaste although alcohol taste comes through often and takes away from flavor. Nice--will recommend and drink often.

4-pack from Brewers World, Dumont, NJ...bottle pours reddish-brown with a light beige head...aroma is quite busy, sweet, dark fruits, plum, raisin, fig, molasses...flavor is rich with much of the same, some alcohol in the aftertaste...the only thing I’d take away from this beer is that its a bit too carbonated, otherwise very good.

Bottle. High creamy and long lasting off-white head. Hazy orange read body. Powerful barley malt aroma with a good deal of alcohol, grassy notes and a faint hint of cocoa. Sweet caramel coffee flavor made less sweet by a good deal of alcohol and a bit of bitterness. Low carbonation. Short aftertaste. Interesting and hard to describe.
